Using an INTRO in the middle of a song

Using an INTRO in the middle of a song

An idea that came from Member WilliamD – to use an INTRO from a STYLE in the middle of a song.

I have always loved Ice Cream ...

Well, yes, but here I am talking about the song Ice Cream which came out in 1955 with Chris Barber and his Jazz Band.
This amazing version (below) was recorded at a New Year Concert on 6th January 2024.

Ice Cream - Wolfgang Friedrich & New Orleans Dixieland Band

I have played this on my Tyros 4 with two ‘jazzy’ STYLES, Dixieland and Charleston.  To get the jazz band to have their input in my song I have added INTRO III from Dixieland after the first verse; and further on INTRO III from Charleston.

Have a listen to how it turned out.

Thanks for the suggestion William!

Another one with the INTRO added into the middle of the song.

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.  The STYLE is SchlagerPop, MAIN VARIATION B from ENTERTAINER. The INTRO I have used is INTRO III.  So the INTRO is not only at the beginning of the song but also in the middle of the song.

The little ‘run-down’ with the guitar is from a MULTI PAD.  Not from a REGISTRATION MEMORY this time, but triggered in the bar before I wanted to hear it .. and then switched off by pressing the STOP button.  This is why it’s a good idea to continue a Miltipad way beyond the end of the melody (ie. just leave it blank for a couple of bars) as this gives you plenty of time to lift a hand off and STOP it playing.

Has anyone else played a piece where they have used an INTRO in the middle of a song?

Yes; I do this all the time, and also use Fills as loops, which is reserved for Korg only.

Thanks to Hugh for bringing back some happy memories...I helped every Saturday night with one of my Microphone accounts who had the job of producing all the PA for a local Jazz Club.
At that time I had an Hi-Speed Revox tape recorder so have enjoyed recording Chris Barber. Acker Bilk. Kenny Ball. George Chisholm etc: etc:
There was an understanding with the bands that all recording would be kept private.

I often use intro’s during certain performances around middle 8. Most of the time I prefer to do my own intro’s and endings rather than the preset one’s.

Here's a simple demo.
From 0:43 to 1:04 I use Intro 2, and from 1:26 to 1:46 I use Intro 3 (Intro 1 for Yamaha).

Hi Hugh
I'm a little confused how you load 2 styles at the same time and use their intros.  I'm a Tyros 4 player.

If you start with styleA and use say Intro3 to start the song and then want to use a different intro BUT from styleB  How do you keep style A running and when it's time to use an intro from StyleB  how do you load it play the intro in the middle of the song and then go back to style A.

Thanks Chris

Chris,

Re: Ice Cream .. Box LINK below to listen/download.

https://app.box.com/s/5dqitbklpnsutf2oz02y2qfoptbalisz
I think this comes down to how you ‘play’ your keyboard in the first place.  If you choose a Yamaha STYLE and turn ON the OTS LINK (One Touch Setting) ...

... then Yamaha will choose four VOICES that they think will sound good with the Style you have chosen ...

... and if the ACMP is not already ON, it will turn it ON.

These VOICES are LINKED to the Style MAIN VARIATION that you select ...
MAIN A to VOICE 1; MAIN B to VOICE 2; MAIN C to VOICE 3; MAIN D to VOICE 4.

If one plays using this method, then it’s using ONE Style only .. and there is no way you can use the INTROS from two Styles.

I never use the OTS system (I make sure it's OFF). When I play something, I always set up the REGISTRATION MEMORY with what I want. On my Tyros 4 I have 8 Registration Memories .. and set these up (as many as I need) for one song ie. I have one REGISTRATION BANK per song .. and give it the name of the song. So my song Ice Cream has the file name Ice Cream.S917.RGT

So when you say, “how you load 2 styles at the same time” .. the two STYLES are actually loaded into a REGISTRATION MEMORY BANK in different slots .. and then I press those Registration Memory buttons as I play. I usually do this with my left hand, as I can take my left hand off the chord I am playing (which is set to keep going when I take my hand off) and trigger the next Registration Memory button just before the first beat of the bar where I want the change to happen.

Also, I can set up the SYNC START and the INTROS so they are ‘flashing’ (well, it’s actually the STYLE letter that is flashing, not the INTRO button) .. and anything ‘flashing’ can be stored into a REGISTRATION MEMORY. This means my whole song with all it’s changes are set into the Registration Memories, and I just move along through the Registration Memories as I play and don’t have to do changes by hitting INTRO buttons or MAIN VARIATION buttons.

In Ice Cream, I have not used a Left Hand Voice; and have a VOICE set up in R1 only .. so in the screen shots below only look at the STYLE and what is in RIGHT1.

Both STYLES are PRESET Styles; and the VOICES are PRESET ones apart from Nice Sax, which is an imported one which I have sitting in USER. .. so my VOICE in REGISTRATION MEMORY 2 links to that. I mention all this because I am attaching my file Ice Cream.S917.RGT for Tyros 4 owners to download and try (put it into USER) .. and this should work so long as they download Nice Sax.S230.swv and pop that into USER as well for the Registration to LINK to.

When loaded, this is what the REGISTRATION BANK looks like.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 1

Dixieland is set to MAIN VARIATION B; and the Intro is set to INTRO II .. so the B is ‘flashing’; and the START/STOP is ‘flashing’ as I have the SYNC START “ON”.

All set for me to start playing! I play a C chord and INTRO II comes in .. and I start playing the melody at the end of the Intro.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 2

Dixieland is on MAIN VARIATION B; and the Intro is set to INTRO III .. so the B is ‘flashing’; and the START/STOP is ‘flashing’ as I have the SYNC START “ON”.

When playing the song, I trigger this Memory just before the first beat of the bar where I want it .. plonk my left hand back on playing the chord ON the first beat of the bar .. and INTRO III comes in with the ‘break’ in the song. I play the melody again with the right hand as soon as the ‘break’ has ended.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 3

Nothing ‘flashing’. Still Dixieland. Just a change of MAIN VARIATION from B to D (and the Voice changes to Trombone).

Continuing with the melody.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 4

Greyed out, so not used.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 5

In this Registration Memory I have a change of STYLE (which is Charleston, MAIN VARIATION D) together with it’s INTRO III. Both the D and the START/STOP are ‘flashing’ so when I trigger it just before the first beat of the bar where I want it .. and play a chord ON the first beat of the bar .. I get the ‘break’ from the second Style. I then continue with the melody at the end of the ‘break’.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 6 & 7

Style still Charleston, Variation D; nothing flashing. Just a change of VOICE to Trombone .. then ClassicalGtr .. and just continuing with the melody.

To end, I pressed ENDING III (Charleston).

Chris .. hope this has explained what is going on here!

Hugh

Thanks so much Hugh
You are a star and extra thanks for the explicit details and images you went to so much effort to include.  I figured that you were doing all this via registrations and it works perfectly!!!
