PANNING & PERSPECTIVE
If I ask what panning is and does, everyone will probably give the same answer:
Panning is a technique used in audio to create a sense of motion or position - it is the placement of sound within a stereo or surround field.
The goal is to create a clearer, more spacious mix in audio that avoids "muddy" or overlapping sounds.
Much more could be said, but this is the essence.
I don't agree with all of this.
First of all, I have always disliked stereo, because the sound then tends to come from the speaker, which is as far from reality as it can get.
Surround is a more appropriate description, because the sound then arises BETWEEN the speakers.
The speakers should not be detectable as a source.
I always mix with my STAX Lambda headset, which is the best investment I have ever made in audio, along with the development of my horn system.
My goal is to achieve a soundstage that is wide, but can never be perceived as coming from the speakers.
Traditional panning does not fit into my image, because very often max panning is used to one of the sides, which effectively limits (read: the perspective).
When I change the panning a little towards the center, the soundstage opens up, and the dynamics improve drastically.
The placement of the instrument also appears significantly better.
Fade effects that are used more and more today are victims of the same thing - the sound goes from far left to far right, instead of being a little closer to the center, which makes the effect more natural.
When I finally test the soundstage with my horns, the soundstage is the same, which is practically impossible to achieve with traditional (also expensive) speakers.
I was born a HiFi enthusiast.
