What keyboard model(s) do you have ?: Tyros 4
Location: Weston-super-Mare
Bio: I am a 'self taught' home organ and keyboard player. Many years ago I played piano in a couple of 'bands' (one a Scottish Country Dance Band). We all had the chords of the piece we were playing written out in front of us, and as a result I have never felt the need to 'read music'. People say I 'play by ear', but a better description would be that I 'play by chords'.

When you do a Reply to a thread, if you do a Quick Reply you will only be able to post text.
If you choose New Reply ...
... you will have access to all the BBCodes at the top and be able to do Bold, Italics, Underline etc. .. and colours.
When you click into the posting box you can just go ahead and type away. But the reason why I am posting this thread is because of what is likely to happen if you highlight, COPY, and PASTE something into this posting box. More often than not I prepare what I am going to say in a WORD document, and may COPY and PASTE into it eg. something from Wikipedia. In this next paragraph I am going to PASTE something I have COPIED from Wikipedia about Elvis Presley. When I did a PASTE .. this is what appeared in the posting box! Or nearly didn’t appear (?) as I wasn’t really aware that my PASTE had done anything!
If this has happened to you, you may have decided it is not possible to do anything in this forum other than to make comments as Replies. Well, I can tell you that your PASTE is there in the box .. it’s just a question of how to get it to appear as a normal bit of typing.
What has happened here is that the formatting of what you COPIED isn’t compatible with what is in the posting box. Look at the BBCodes over the top of the posting box and the one you need is Remove formatting. This is to the right of the BBCode for colours.
To remove the formatting that has made my PASTE barely visible I must highlight the line that is (barely) showing, and then click on the Remove Formatting BBCode at the top. I highlight it by clicking at one end with my mouse, holding down and dragging my mouse across to the other end .. then let go. If you have an iPad or iPhone, highlight the area in the way that you normally would.
At which point the wording will revert to the ‘default’ formatting .. and we get this showing.
Please Note: You may have to click this Remove Formatting button several times!
That’s better! Now we can see what we are doing so can go into the posting box and make any changes (or add Bold, Italics, Colours etc.).
And my COPY and PASTE now ends up as it should (the below is only part of the text that is showing).
Obviously the same applies if you are starting a New Thread.
Hugh

What keyboard model(s) do you have ?: Yamaha Genos 2, KORG PA5X, KETRON EVM, Crumar Mojo Suitcase, Genelec Speakers with sub woofer, King KORG and MK3 61 MIDI Keyboard.
Location: London
Bio: My name is James (alias James Tyros, I adopted as a username on some of my performances when I discovered Yamaha Tyros).
I was born in 1960 in a North East Coastal Town called Hartlepool (don’t mention the monkey!). I moved to London in 1992. In 1971 my parents were given an old upright piano from an elderly friend. My sisters took no interest but I was fascinated by it and kept hammering away at the ivory's almost daily. My school teacher, at the time, told me that I had an ear for music and a hidden talent. I was always listening to music, be it on the radio or record player at home. Often falling asleep with the radio plugged into my ears at night!
The first notes I started to pick out was identified from Beautiful Dreamer, which was constantly being played on the record player at home. I followed it repeatedly and with practice, trial and error, that became my first piece which I picked up by ear. Over the years I found I was able to listen to most music a few times and pick it up on the piano. I couldn't quite get the left hand too well without 'vamping' too much! I was then treated me to my first electronic organ. Actually it was a table top Bontempi in bright red with chord push buttons on the left. Bought from the Co-op with stamps, so you can imagine it. Small, plastic and tin box sound but to me was a joy! The rest is history but needless to say I adapted to the organ far better than the piano. I'd never consider myself a pianist, although I have hammered out some old time sing-a-longs at various charity events. But the organ became my foundation and still is today. I never learned to play off music. I don't consider myself a perfect keyboard player but am told otherwise.
To me playing by ear holds many advantages, ability just to listen to music and pick it up on the keys. But it’s not just playing by memory. I know what a key should sound like before I play it. Of course I would have loved to be able to study and read music but never had the opportunity. It's also a joy to improvise with various pieces and to create my own renditions.
I am now the proud owner of Yamaha Genos 2 and KORG PA5X and in 2025 recent purchase of a KETRON EVM Module with Touchscreen. Previously, Yamaha Tyros 3, 4, 5 and various electronic organs such as Orla, Yamaha PSR-540 and Yamaha Electone FE-40. I have had the pleasure of playing Hammond and Yamaha with Leslie speakers in club bookings. I had regular venues in North East pubs and clubs in the early years. Nowadays I play more as a personal hobby at home. I still enjoy composing my own compositions. Amongst my previous performances, I play pieces from the late great and inspirational Klaus Wunderlich on Tyros 3. The tracks are picked from what I think was Klaus Wunderlich best album 'Dream Concerto'.
I enjoy listening and reading about other performers, amateur or otherwise, in order to learn from each other. I particularly like to hear from other performers who play by ear.

Perfectly explained Hugh.
This was happening to me, as you know, and with your expertise we are now able to post our messages correctly.
A valuable tip. Thanks.
James.

@Graham
I always pasted the text into a text editor, and thus did not experience this problem.
But I have seen that others have problems with this, and have had to correct many posts.
The method Hugh shows is the correct way to do this and I can guarantee it works.

I have found that depending on how complex the 'formatting' is, you may have to click that Remove Formatting button several times. I have added an amendment to my original post about this.
I have not come across a situation where I haven't ended up with all the text I want to work on.

@Hugh
Precisely.
I prefer the way I've always used, which is pretty much the same as you and Graham - I paste the text into Google Translate, a lot also because I'm not a native English speaker.
This way I don't have to think about formatting.

What I have been finding with the latest posts I have done is that if I put everything into a WORD document, do all the bolds and colours I want (in WORD); highlight it all .. then click on Verdana Point 12 .. then highlight it all again and do a COPY and PASTE into the posting box .. it all comes out perfectly without having to 'unformat' anything. This includes all the bolds, italics and colours, which all come out 'as is', so I don't have to do them again in the posting box. That is a bonus!

@Hugh
This is exactly the same thing I often do - I've been using MS Publisher since 1994, and everything I do there can be pasted into the forum and become exactly as it is in Publisher.

Very useful. Some of my posts lately have been 'blank' and doing other very odd things, I will try your solution the next time it happens.
I figured I might find something to try to correct it if I went a-lookin' for it. I was not disappointed. Thanks Hugh
