BROKEN KETRON AUDYA 76 ACQUIRED

Today I pick up a broken Ketron Audya 76, which I got for a ridiculous NOK 1000.
The seller says that it was destroyed when he tried to install a new hard drive and connected it incorrectly.

Lol.
It is not possible to destroy the Audya by connecting the hard drive incorrectly, but it is quite possible to turn the cable the wrong way, plus forget to overwrite the new hard drive's serial number with the old one.

Before this there were some noises in some sounds, but this is probably due to errors in the software or bad sensors on the keybed.

All this I know more about when I try to start it/open it up, remove and test the hard drive.
I have a cloned copy of my previous Audya's original hard drive handy just in case.

It appears as new to look at.
Not a single scratch.



Attempts to start up show that something is wrong, because the screen only shows some garbled unreadable.
But the hard drive buzzes and runs and all buttons and lights seem to work.

So then the next step is to disassemble, and check if the hard drive is correctly connected.

AUDYA OPENED

The hard drive spins when it is in the keyboard, but the screen is white.
The startup is also far too fast; only a couple of seconds, while the normal start-up time is just over a minute.

I took the disk out and mounted it in an adapter for the PC, and then there was no life in it.
It is therefore defective, which often happens with this type of disc - Audya is notorious for this.

I have ordered a new blank disk, and I am betting that it will be fine to copy my old cloned copy onto it.

This involved several problems I was not prepared for, but now the keyboard works.
The first problem was that I didn't get power on either the original drive or the one I bought, and it turned out that the power supply to the adapter was faulty.

I bought a new one, only to find that it didn't have a SATA to PATA adapter cable for the power supply.
I made one myself, but the two drives still wouldn't boot.

Then I got an idea:
What if I use another disk that is smaller ?

I had a 20GB hard drive from a defective Korg Pa1X that worked with the adapter.
First I entered the serial number from the original Audya disc on the new one, and then copied all the data from my old Audya disc onto this one.

After inserting the disc into Audya and starting it, the screen was still white.
However, all buttons worked, and when I connected the headset everything worked as it should.

So it is the screen that is defective, and I can connect an external screen and everything should work.

NEXT AND FINAL STEP

Original disc is defective, as expected.
And the screen is defective.

By putting the original serial number on a new disk and copying data from an old clone, the keyboard works.
For some unknown reason, the drums take on a life of their own and do not follow the beat; only a few styles work properly.
This can normally be fixed by re-entering the OS.

So now all that remains is to assemble everything again, and connect an external monitor (which hopefully works).
Then re-enter the OS and everything should be fine.

After reinstalling the system with an OS that works with all previous installations, neither the internal display nor the external display still work.
Very strange and illogical.

As a result, this will not be used, and will be resold.

Ive been reading your column with interest, you certainly got further along than i would have lol.
i wonder why as external monitor would`nt  display work ? do you think the keyboard has had water damage?

There is no indication of water damage or anything else - the keyboard looks new both externally and internally.
The only answer I can find for the external display not working is that it may be of an unsupported type, which is a known issue.

Mine is a fairly new LCD and I may try another one I have lying around that is as old as the Audya.
Sick - internal display shows white, while external display shows green, which may indicate a software error.

If I get screenshots on one of the screens, I can run extensive test procedures to troubleshoot where the cause lies and correct these.
This is information that is locked to the service manual, as only authorized service technicians should be able to carry out such tests.

I can carry out such tests for Tyros1, Pa800, Pa3X and Audya.

So I haven't given up completely yet, as I want to try an older monitor, and in addition connect the original disk, because this one also boots up the keyboard, but without anything working.
It might be an idea to re-enter the OS - who knows.
