IDEAL EXPRESSION TUNING ?

Most professionals who edit styles seem to share the opinion that variations (mains) and fills should have an increasing intensity from the first to the last.

Personally, I disagree with this, because this creates a stressful performance, where it is all about constantly maximizing, and finally ending in a climax.

I have a feeling more for the way jazz performers do it; starting calmly, increasing the intensity a little, doing a jam session, and finally calming down again.

This would have given Expression values something like this:
Var 1 100
Var 2 110
Var 3 120
Var 4 110

I have the expression set to 0 on everything but the drums but that's because I automate the expression to side chain. I find the best way to way to set the track levels is by using a loudness meter

I understand that using side chains excludes the use of expressions ?
But you use expressions for drums and perc ?

And using a loudness meter is a good idea, because the Pa5X's level meter is very unreliable, especially in the bass range.
I use Foobar2000's spectrum display, but a loudness meter would be the best solution.
