MIXING HAS DEVELOPED IN A NEGATIVE DIRECTION

In my opinion and conviction, there has been a negative development in mixing since digital technology made its entrance.

I have always hated compressors, because they are used in an unfortunate way.
The vast majority of sound studios today also use compressors as a Limiter at the end, rather in the same way as the Pa5X's Finalizer Limiter does.

How this sounds is perhaps easier to explain visually:
If you study the level meter for modern recordings, you will see that the level is around -20dB, and that it moves very little.
This is because a Limiter has been used, which pushes all effects up and down in proportion to fit -20dB.
Older recordings move much more, although these have a maximum effect of -20dB.
The same happens on the Pa5X when the Limiter is switched off.

What a Limiter actually does is limit the dynamics, which compresses the soundstage.
When I study the level output of my best recordings, I notice that the meter moves much more than the less good ones.
So the studio has not used Limiter..?

One or more compressors can work very well together if they are used moderately, and thus it seems totally pointless to destroy this by using the Limiter at the end..?


In the future edits I will try to disable Limiter.
