HEADSET ON DIFFERENT USERS = DIFFERENT RESULTS

Over more than 40 years, I have had many surprising experiences with headsets.
I have tried many of the best in the world, but have rarely agreed that they are.

Why ?

Because I have a slightly different and larger head shape than what is most common, and that the ears are larger.
This greatly (very greatly) affects the result, because the headset squeezes more on the ears, which gives more bass and more powerful sound. At the same time, ear pads are often too small, which has the opposite effect.

A good example of how badly a good headset can work is the beyerdynamic T70, which I have now had for many years.
Only after many years of use did I get around to testing these without earpads - with earpads the headset squeezes to the extent that my ears hurt - without earpads they are fantastically comfortable, and all details appear markedly clearer, plus the bass is tremendously improved. In short State of the Art - WITHOUT ear pads. They are actually so significantly improved that they are perhaps as good or better than my new STAX Lambda..!

Another decisive factor is the amplifier - which amplifier is used ?
The vast majority use the amplifier built into the device the headset is connected to, which almost never provides ideal conditions, because this has standard quality; read: bad.
It is likely that your headset will be much better with a reasonable quality external headset amplifier, which in most cases is better than built-in amplifiers.

I've been crazy about sound since I was 3-4 years old, and was a disc jockey for my mother already when I was that old - I changed singles on the turntable while she did housework.
I got my own mono system when I was 8 years old - a complete radio cabinet (I took over my father's old system) with reel to reel tape recorder, and even then started making my own recordings.
My father and his brothers were semi-professional musicians for many years, and had created their own acoustically dead sound studio by lining the walls with egg cartons.
The first thing I invested in when I moved out on my own was a complete, good quality stereo system and an accordion that cost a year's salary.

In recent years, I have read everything I could about sound and acoustics, and carried out many experiments along the way, as well as developing my own speaker systems.
To this day I am blessed with unusually good hearing - I still hear frequencies well above 20kHz, which very few people over 40 do.


Here are some facts about headsets that are very little talked about - what does the user look like?

* There are approximately 8 different basic head shapes
* There are approximately 30 different types of ears
* There are approximately 12 different hair types


   

   

   

* Your head shape will greatly affect the sound - if it is larger than normal, the headset will squeeze your ears and the bass will often be too powerful.
In such cases, the thickness of the ear pads can be reduced to reduce the pressure.

* If your ears are larger than normal, many headsets' ear pads will be too small and should be replaced with ones that are large enough to cover the entire ear.

* If you have a lot of hair that is also curly, this will increase the size of your head and can be corrected by changing your hairstyle or ideally removing it completely.
In any case, the hair must be away from the ears.

The lesson learned from the above should be that no State of the Art headset is guaranteed to work optimally on YOU, because we all have different head shapes, ear shapes and hair types/hairstyles.
