Navigating the Forum

Most of you will already know all this, but if you have just joined the Forum, read on.
Note: The things that I am explaining below only happen if you are Logged In.
 
First ...
 
When you are on the Forum Home Page, scroll down to the bottom .. and you will see here a list of the ‘latest postings’ (Recent Threads). The listings in dark blue are the ones that you haven’t yet read (click on them to read them), and the ones in light blue (indicated by the blue arrow) are ones that you have already read.
 
   
 
This way you can keep up to date as to what is going on.
 
If you want to check on which Posts you haven’t yet read, work from the top of the Home Page downwards. The ones that you haven’t yet visited have a black ‘dot’ next to them.
 
   
 
Eg: In CATEGORY 2, if I click on the words COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS (which have a black dot by them) I am taken to a screen that is split into two sections .. top and bottom.
 
The top section says Important Threads ...
 
   
 
... and in the section below it says Normal Threads.
 
   
 
Again, it’s the Thread(s) with the dark blue that I haven’t yet read.
None in Important Threads; and two in Normal Threads .. FINALLY! and NEW GLOBAL MODERATOR.
By checking over on the right I can see the date the Last Post was posted (Note that dates are in the format Month-Day-Year) ... and who by.
Note: Most Threads just have ‘Normal Threads’.
 
Next ...
 
When you have read a Thread (or a Reply) you may feel that the poster has put up something you have found interesting .. or maybe must have spent quite some time on putting it all together. In which case, just click the LIKE button. When somebody has spent some time on finding things to share with others there is nothing like a LIKE indicating one’s efforts have been appreciated.
 
   
 
   
 
It is also appreciated when STARS are given for one’s efforts. You can give any number of STARS with just one click .. however many STARS you think the thread deserves.  If the Thread already has stars, you can give more if you think the Thread deserves more. Having STARS at the top will tell prospective viewers whether or not the Thread is worth taking a look at.

Scroll down a couple of Posts to read how these STARS work; or click this LINK below to be taken there directly.

And finally ...
 
If you have been following a Thread and would like a ‘notification’ when something new is added, scroll down to the bottom of the Thread and you will see Subscribe.
 
   
 
Click on Subscribe to this thread and and you get an option to be notified by email when a new Post goes up.
 
   
 
Choose Instant Email Notification, click Subscribe to Thread, and the email will be sent to the one you currently have in the system (with a LINK to click on to take you there).
 
Then at any point, if you no longer wish to receive Notification Emails about a Thread, scroll down to the bottom where this time you will see an Unsubscribe to click on.

Giving STARS for THREADS is not as simple as it seems. 

I have done a Google Search for how these STARS on THREADS work in a MyBB forum (which ours is) and it has come up with this:

You click on the number of STARS you want to give to a Thread .. and that number of STARS is allocated to the thread.
Having done this once, you can't do it again to the same Thread.
And you can't give yourself STARS.

The next person that clicks on some STARS .. this happens ...

All the stars to date are added together .. and divided by the number of Members voting. 
This becomes the new 'Star Rating'.

So if you want to give someone another STAR, don't click on ONE STAR .. as this will NOT be added to the number of STARS showing. 1 'star' will be added to the total number of STARS given to date, and divided by the number of people who have voted. This will effectively reduce the number of STARS showing for that THREAD.

Instead, click on the TOTAL number of STARS you wish that person to have, which will then be added in to the mix .. and may or may not increase the number of STARS showing.

Chellos comment and suggestion from elsewhere in the Forum:

"I can confirm that:
All the stars to date are added together .. and divided by the number of Members voting.

This is an unfortunate feature that I have no way of editing, but I have the following tips for using Stars on Threads in a way that gives a more fair result:

If a thread has a higher rating than you want to give, you should refrain from giving yours, because the total will then be lower.  Only give a rating if this is higher than the one already given."

More on giving STARS ...
 
If you have not given a Thread any STARS, then hovering over one of the five stars it will tell you the STAR RATING you are about to give. This happens whether or not any stars have been given to that thread to date.
 
Below is a Thread started by Chello.
It has 3 STARS.
 
   
 
If I now hover over a STAR it will tell me what STAR RATING I am about to give (which I am not going to do .. this is just to illustrate what happens!).
 
   
 
What’s important here is that it is telling me I can allocate a STAR RATING for this thread as so far I haven’t given one. Very helpful, as I doubt very much if I would remember whether or not I had given this thread a rating. And by giving it four stars this may or may not increase the rating from 3 to 4. If I gave it 5, it probably would.
 
Now here’s another one which I know I gave 5 STARS to.
Hovering over any one of the stars showing it tells me 5 people have voted .. and the ‘average’ star rating is 2.4. So this shows as two stars.
 
   
 
2.4 x 5 = 12 stars .. minus the 5 I gave = 7 stars in total given by 4 other people. So no one else can have given 5 STARS as a rating for this thread. And one person must have given only one star. This certainly does not reflect the content of this thread.

So come on people, get your act together and use the STAR RATING as it should be used .. positively!

PS. It is only when you have given a star rating that it will show you how many people have voted, and what the average star rating is. As you can’t vote for your own thread, this means that you will never get to see how your star rating has been arrived at.
