Listening to the PARTS in a STYLE
I’m sure we are all aware that with a Yamaha STYLE, the ‘band’ that you can hear accompanying you is made up of PARTS .. RHYTHM 1, RHYTHM 2, BASS, CHORD 1, CHORD 2, PAD, PHRASE 1 and PHRASE 2. This has not always been the case with other manufacturers. The Roland organs, right up until their last one, had a STYLE that would accompany you .. but you had no access to the players in the ‘band’ .. apart from the drummer. The drums were either ON or OFF; and the accompaniment was either ON or OFF, and you could adjust their VOLUMES to get a proper balance between the two.
But even with my Yamaha AR80 organ you had the facility to turn those PARTS I mentioned above either ON or OFF. Not only that, but you could also DELETE the Yamaha PARTS and replace them with something of your own. This meant you had complete control over the band members accompanying you .. and if you didn’t like the trumpeter you could get rid of him!
So when I choose a STYLE, I always listen to those PARTS .. and more often than not I get rid of PAD, as that is always a ‘continuous’ sound eg. Strings, and often clashes with the Left Hand Voice I am using.
What I have only just discovered recently with my Tyros 4 is how to listen to these PARTS quickly and effectively.
When you have the STYLE up on screen, press the CHANNEL ON/OFF button ...
... and you will see all the PARTS listed. They will all be showing ON.
Eg. Orchestral Ballad, VARIATION C.
Note: Blacked out PARTS indicate that there is nothing in there.
To turn any of those parts OFF you press the button that says ON for that part and it will switch to OFF. Press it again (briefly) and it’s back ON.
What I didn’t know is that if you PRESS and HOLD that button it will switch to SOLO. This means you can listen to just that one PART .. with all the others switched OFF. Go down the line pressing and holding each in turn and you can listen to each PART one after the other.
At any time you want to get back to them all being ON again, just press any of the buttons briefly.
So I have done this with this STYLE, and underneath is a DEMO for you to click on so you can hear what each part sounds like. I would definitely turn those STRINGS to OFF as I find them very ‘raspish’!
First, the STYLE playing with all it’s PARTS; followed by each of the above in turn.
