What role a sound plays

When creating keyboard sets or sounds rather than scrolling through sounds consider it as a role lead, body , air , support.

Randomly pick any sounds listen to it does it carry a melody or does it create space do this without and effects just a dry sound.

Now select a second sound how does it react with the first does it stand out ? Does it dominate the first sound does it add to or take away from the first sound. 

As you layer the sounds listen in solo the together how does one sound affect another try in unison or an octave ? Does the role change does the second layer dominate or does the first layer dominate
