Setting Reveeb To The Size Of Room
#1
Wink
I know we have spoken about this before but just as you adjust your eq according to the size of the room you are playong in. My observations when using reverb this also needs to be adjusted according to the room your actually playing in.

Say you have a registration / keyboard set that you have been using at home which has quite alot of reverb. If you use that same keyboard set in a large room then just as your sound is amplified so to will the reverb.

Exactly.
This is a fact, and it is strange that no one has said anything about this, even though many keyboard players are active musicians who perform on a stage for an audience.

It could be interesting to ask: "What are acoustics, and which frequencies are most affected ?"

My listening room is about perfectly acoustically balanced; i.e. that when I clap my hands, there is absolutely no echo.
My speaker system without horns is designed in relation to the acoustics of the room.

Then comes something interesting:
When I built the horns, I made these so that they can be connected and disconnected by sliding them.
The horns does something with the acoustics - the range from 100Hz to 6kHz gets an increase of several dB; without the acoustics being negatively affected - I can still clap my hands without an echo occurring.

It is therefore the range 100Hz to 6kHz that has the greatest impact on the acoustics, which should also be taken into account when EQing.
Anyone who really understands mixing knows this, and knows that precisely this area is the most important for achieving effective results.

This again means that it is possible to some extent to compensate for the lack of acoustics by adding horns or increasing the EQ in this tonal range - or both.

This is music's most important tonal range, where all instruments have their distinctive character in their limited range of 100Hz - 6kHz; some even wider.

Horns can be said to give the music new life, as part of the original acoustics are revived.

So therefore it would be worth having a set of keyboard sets / registrations for home use and other sets for gig purposes which would / should use less reverb ?

Just as I’m thinking you should also have different keyboard sets for home that are individually eq’d for home and gig purposes

Absolutely - I see it as absolutely necessary to have two different setups; one for home use, and one for gig purposes.
Someone should have made such available for use, but to date no one has.

Apart from different room size settings & furnishings, all this changes depending on the number of people attending which greatly absurds sounds.

It's only players like ourselves that have experienced ears and can understand the differences in the rooms acoustics.

Most of the audience would not notice sound changers as they are just there to be entertained.

Thank you for your wise and in-depth comment.
Furniture and the number of people in the audience have a significant impact on the acoustics.

And never forget that it is us musicians who must at all times assess how the acoustics sound - we are the professionals; not the audience.

Good point, Graham.  15
