RESTORATION OF KORG OASYS 76

RESTORATION OF KORG OASYS 76
I bought an OASYS 76 right before I bought Pa5X.
This was badly damaged during transport, and in any case needs extensive restoration. I only paid 500€, because I got 1000€ refunded from the transport company.

In addition to the transport damage, it has received harsh treatment, as the pictures show. All switches work poorly, and may need to be replaced, plus only 2 out of 8 pads work.

New parts can easily cost hundreds of €, but an OASYS is worth restoring.
I start the project one of the days.

Screen, keybed and potentiometers are fortunately in very good condition.

The Vector Joystick lacks the outer stick to be threaded on the inner stick, but this one is easy to make new.

The front chassis has suffered transport damage.

The right side piece is heavily scratched by hard use.

The left side piece is heavily scratched by hard use.

The CD-ROM drive is squatted in cassis, which is twisted.

There is a strong dent under the keys, which means that these cannot be pressed all the way down.

PROCEDURE FOR RESTORATION:

1: The first thing I do is make a note of exactly which buttons work or not, and to what extent they work.

2: The next thing is to open the panel and disassemble all cards on which there are buttons, and use a special spray - Caig Labs DeoxIT D5S-6P - this spray is the only one on the market that does what it should without breaking anything. It has to be imported, and is quite expensive; about £50. I have ordered a box from Germany.

The spray has to work for a few minutes while the buttons are pressed repeatedly, and finally all dirt is cleaned away with a Q-tip.

3: Then the cards and everything else are assembled for final test.
If everything works correctly, the next step will be started.

4: To correct the dents of the chassis, it is necessary to dampen absolutely everything, which is a lot of work. With a little luck, I only need to disassemble the keybed - if possible to use clamps to correct it. If it is necessary to use an anvil and hammer, then everything will have to be disassembled, because the cards and the screen will not withstand heavy blows in the chassis while mounted in this.

5: The side panels must be sanded and plastered to finish painting.
I intend to use a different color for these as well as the rear panel strip to integrate the look with the Pa5X.

6: Finally, only general cleaning and a complete reinstallation of the system remain.
