STING'S VOICE IS WORTH STUDYING

STING'S VOICE IS WORTH STUDYING

I happened to listen to his "Cold Song" and was amazed by his operatic use of his voice.

He is undoubtedly an exceptionally talented vocalist, which made me curious - I asked AI if Sting had classical singing training, and got this interesting answer:

Sting has stated that he is not a classically trained singer. While he has explored various musical styles, including classical-influenced projects like his lute album of John Dowland songs, he did not come from a conservatory background and is largely self-taught, often putting himself in the role of a student to learn new skills.

Key details regarding Sting's vocal training and technique:

* No Formal Training: Sting has explicitly said, "I'm not a classically trained singer at all, by any means".
* Alexander Technique: To handle the physical demands of singing and playing bass, Sting has trained in the Alexander Technique, which helps improve posture, breathing, and reduce tension while performing.
* Vocal Approach: Rather than traditional training, he has developed his voice through decades of performance, learning through experience and by observing other masters.
* Adaptability: He has successfully worked with orchestras and sang early music, showing a high level of adaptability, but notes his approach to these genres is from a rock/pop perspective, not formal training.

Sting's approach to his art is often described as that of a "work in progress," where he constantly seeks to learn new skills, such as playing the lute or arranging for orchestras.

Funny that you say that, because I have too.
I've never really liked his work, largely due to his personality and political commitment that he mixes into his musical message - I don't like that.

Still - I have to admit his talent, and the only one I've heard who uses his voice in a similar way is Thijs van Leer in Focus.

The song "Brother" is a good example.
