CREATE YOUR OWN SOUNDS WITH A FEW KEYPRESSES

CREATE YOUR OWN SOUNDS WITH A FEW KEYPRESSES

Why install new sounds, when you can easily create your own ?

If you need e.g. a special acoustic piano, you can create your own sound by loading different models into each Upper 1, 2 and 3.

By adjusting their volume individually and adding desired effects you can achieve surprising results.
You can also combine an acoustic piano with almost anything else, and create a sound that cannot be found anywhere else.

If you are a little more advanced, you can customize each sound you use for this unlimitedly with EQ and effects, and use these instead of the standard sounds.

In a little while I will post my own as Keyboard Sets, and these will all be based on the standard sounds, so that anyone can use them by just loading the Keyboard Set.

Very interesting.

I think it’s so easy to fall into a cycle of editing and re editing when only some minor was needed in the first place.

It’s like making a glass of cordial you start off with the juice and the more water you add the weaker the initial juice becomes.

Could this be the same with sound ?

Good comparison you made there.

I have become very convinced of one thing, and that is that all edits should be minimized, because the more you edit, the greater the chance of ending up with a result that is not as expected.

I think a bit like Picasso; do things as quickly as possible, with as few movements as possible, and use intuition (your ears).

When it comes to combining sounds, it's about finding one that fits as well as possible with the first, so that edits are not necessary; or only minimal.

This always gives solid results.

And when it comes to edits for the Pa5X's internal styles/sounds/pads/keyboard sets, only minimal edits are necessary, because all mixing is generally done exceptionally well.

Styles can be dramatically improved using the Drum Editor, and a boost of 2-3 dB with EQ MID for active elements is usually plenty, as well as a similar boost with EQ LOW for the bass drum.

Dance styles can be given new life by giving a strong boost with both EQ MID and EQ LOW for the SFX.
Ambience can be used instead of the reverb effect, but Dance styles must use a reverb effect, because these usually cannot be added to Ambience with the Drum Editor.

The vast majority of styles that have Reverb Room effects on the drum sets are improved by using another effect, and always avoid boosting the bass drums with the effect - here Korg has made a strange choice that ruins otherwise good mixing.

Pads are generally too weak, while Keyboard Sets often have some sounds that are too weak in relation to each other.

Some styles also have too high an output level that can be attenuated to avoid audible compression problems.

In general, all internal styles can be very good with these minimal edits.

I think it’s also important to test with the style running preferably a busy variation when balancing or using effects. Which brings me to the point of the favourites buttons. Which could technically be your bread and butter sounds. But how do you get them to fit in well with most styles.

I always listen specifically to Variation 3 when testing edits, because this is the one that contains the most dynamic variations.

I have a very simple procedure for getting my favorite sounds/pads/keyboard sets to fit most styles after I've made all the necessary edits:

I prefer an output level of around -20 dB, and adjust these accordingly.

Next, I prefer to create favorites to fit each individual genre, which I'll post examples of in a bit when I get time.
