MY MODX M8 IS BEING RETURNED

MY MODX M8 IS BEING RETURNED

I was really keen to keep it, but I have to admit that the user interface is completely incomprehensible.

I've had it since December 1st, but I'm still struggling to understand basic functions - everything seems messy and chaotically organized.

I've contacted the seller about a return.

I've also changed my opinion of the mixing quality:
It's VERY variable; some sounds are barely audible, while others are too powerful.

Using "arranger styles" doesn't work at all as expected.

Daily use is a nightmare - Kronos is easy in comparison.

MODX M doesn't get my recommendation due to its terrible layout.

My MODX M6 will never go away. I love the stunning sound quality from the 3 engines, the huge amount of patches and performances, the keybed and the super knob.
I'm not a sound designer. Mostly I audit presets, make some adjustments and combine good patches into performances.
For arranger styles I have a Pa5X and Genos 2.

The MODX M provides a huge amount of functionality and deep editing, creating a simple user interface is not an easy task.
All editing options are on the instrument, when you use them you'll get familiar and things will go faster.

In the FM-X engine you can import the original sound DX-7 sound banks which are freely available on the internet besides thousands of other DX-7 sound banks.
Yamaha provides a web site to convert .syx banks into .X7L/.X7I Montage/MODX format which you can easily load into the MODX M. The DX-7 banks on the MODX M sound fantastic.

If you connect a FC7 pedal to control the super knob, it's even more fun to play.

I think the value for money of the MODX M6 is really good.

In about a month Yahama will release a firmware update which adds the missing features of the Montage and the free ESP (Expanded Softsynth Plugin) which puts a full featured MODX M into your computer. Then you can edit sounds and performances on a large screen and transfer them to the MODX M. Can't wait to try this out.

You've had Montage before, but I don't know how this compares to the M version, although I think it's quite similar.
You're therefore more familiar with the layout.

I'm also not thrilled with the sound in general, because it's often unbearably sharp with my HS-5 speakers, and I've used the standard setup for both synth and speakers.

The mixing is also colossally variable - if you play one performance relatively loud, you risk blowing up your speakers when you choose another performance due to its sudden content of sub-frequencies with a much higher level than the others.

I can't and won't recommend anyone to buy the MODX M, but you might still be one of those who will be satisfied.
A few are, but there are VERY many who aren't.
