PROPER EQ - REDUCE THE FOCUS ON THE CENTER FREQUENCY
Most of us have some experience using EQ, but are we using it correctly ?
If we use it from a logical mindset - NO.
For example, if you want to increase the 40Hz range, you think logically and increase 40Hz.
This is a bad solution, because the reason that 40Hz needs to be boosted can often be found in the area around it being too dominant.
If you instead reduce the frequencies next to it (e.g. 31.5/50Hz), you achieve the desired boost of 40Hz, while also reducing the frequencies that make 40Hz feel too weak.
So a good rule of thumb is to never boost, but reduce.
I like to use an analogy from my time on the open sea:
You are told that there is a boat in a certain position 10 nautical miles away.
You direct your gaze towards the position (focus), but you do not see the boat.
Here's the trick:
If you look ABOVE/BELOW the horizon without focusing, you see the boat right away.
In translated meaning, the boat becomes 40Hz, and the horizon/sea the frequencies around.
