You need to start off with one track that you want to stand out or use as a reference, then set all other track levels to zero.

I read that you should start out with the drum and bass tracks, is this correct?

yes, drums are the loudest, then the bass just below it and then the rest much lower in level to create a complete sound image

What about balancing the individual drums in the drum / percussion tracks.

Once you have balanced all the style tracks, its then a case of doing the same for the lower and upper sounds.

And I have also read that all this should be done even before any reverb or effects are added.

Once you have set the drum track to say 100 all other tracks should be set to 0 and work from there.

Its then a case of working out the levels of all the other tracks. If you then find out a track is struggling to be heard its then time to use eq on a sound ?

I remember in the past Chello saying when it comes to balancing yamaha styles or sounds to start at 63 for all tracks.
