Today I made an insane discovery regarding drum kit mixing:

I have long believed that parametric eq with advantage and alone can be applied individually to all drum elements, and by studying the layout of styles on the Pa5X I found that Korg has actually done this on some styles.

These styles are particularly distinguished by a better sound quality than others, but can actually be improved significantly by extended use of the same function.

I made my own version of one of these styles where I removed existing effects, and replaced them all with parametric eq of my own choosing, and the difference is formidable.

I have only added parametric eq to Kick, Snare, Cymbal and Hi Hat, and have never before experienced such a big improvement in the punch of the drums - notice the difference in how dynamic punch is reproduced in these two demos.

Knowing that people like you like what I do gives me a good spark to continue with this work.



I mostly follow a very professional setup, but have made some changes in the opposite direction of what the textbook says, because I think this sounds better.

This involves a lot more work, but at the same time makes other things redundant, and all edits are very different from style to style, but the same frequency ranges can be used, because the best effects are achieved by reducing/increasing certain frequency ranges.

The same technique can be used for all instruments, but of course within different frequency ranges.

The Pa5X shows its superiority when it comes to edits of this type, because programs such as Cubase become necessary for most models - even Korg does it with later internal styles for the Pa5X.
