GLOBAL EQ VERSUS INDIVIDUAL EQ

GLOBAL EQ VERSUS INDIVIDUAL EQ

All arrangers/synths have a built-in option for global eq, and many come with tips on its settings.

My tip is: TURN IT OFF !

The only form of EQ that works as intended is the individual one, where you can change the EQ for each instrument and only that.

But why is it like this; what happens ?

Imagine that you have 8 tracks with different instruments and you increase 100Hz by + 3dB.

Then ALL tracks will get this regulation with global EQ, and several instruments will get an unfortunate resonance in the bass range, and if these have a Reverb effect, this will run wild.

Consequence:
Bass beats become unclear and muddy; all instruments with a certain bass content are affected and the sound image is ruined.

If you use individual EQ instead, you can find the bass frequency for each instrument that works best, also together with Reverb if this is necessary.

I only use individual EQ for the drum kit/perc with the Drum Editor, as well as a low EQ boost for the bass instrument.

I also avoid using reverb for all bass instruments (especially bass drums), because this gives a much better punch and precision in the bass's attack.
