Ever find yourself selecting sounds without a goal?

To me sound selection should be intuitive, where you may or may not have a specific goal, but rather a creative "feeling" of what the sound should be. Sort of like an experienced painter knowing exactly what color he wants to mix on the palette. 9 out of 10 times I am playing music from an existing piece written by someone else (classical, pop, rock, new age etc.) so I tend to choose sounds that matches what the composer chose to record.

The description that ✪Rich gives is perhaps the only one that describes it the way I would have done it.

I always use intuition, and try to find a sound that fits existing ones; much like an experienced painter would do to expand the palette (excellent comparison).

I almost never play other people's compositions as they are intended, and prefer to create my own, or make my own arrangements, where I try to find new ways to play traditional melodies.

This is very musically developing for me.
