CREATING SCENES HAS NEVER BEEN SO EASY - LISTEN TO THIS
#11
Look at this.

It's that easy to create a new scene - each part can be given a different sound and volume, and you can - thus - create new ones endlessly.

Can YOU do this, Yamaha..?

Juno D does look so much easier than Fantom-O and MODX+ (had MODX for a year). Being a person who does favor arrangers, I potentially look for a synth that:

1. has a great piano sound that is better than my SX900. 88 weighted hammer keys would also be a plus
2. has a little bit of accompaniment capability for ambient/new age/electronic genres (that perhaps traditional arranger preset styles do not have). I hope this makes sense.

Piano:
I had the MODX+ 76.  I thought its CFX piano has some velocity issues. I always had to increase the velocity curve to bring out the sample's detail and also get a more powerful sound which definitely decreased the dynamic range of the piano. I heard this was less of an issue with the 88 version which apparently the preset CFX's velocity was programmed for. Does the DS have the higher end SuperNatural piano samples?

Accompaniment:
MODX was able to do some accompaniment and it did have a lot of rhythm, arpeggio, chord recognition options to explore, but as mentioned by others here, the U/I is just terrible. It's not clear to me what the Juno DS can do in this area. I see it has a phrase pad, an arpeggiator, drums etc, but for me personally have not seen enough yet to be inspired by it.

Thanks for showing interest in this synth.

Your point 1:
Since I don't have a Juno D, I don't know for sure how good all the sounds are, but I've always found Roland's pianos to be better than others.
Roland's PHA-4 weighted hammer keys used on the Juno D8 are among the best on the market, and some professionals claim that the D8 is the closest they've come to an acoustic piano.

Your point 2: Accompaniment capability for ambient/new age/electronic genres should definitely be good - I don't know for sure how many preset scenes there are, but the videos show that there are at least about 1000 (sounds without full list view) - it's insanely easy to create new ones anyway.

Piano:
The 88 version will always be the best choice if you're particularly concerned with reproducing piano as naturally as possible.

I don't know which samples are on the Juno D, but:
* Flagship Engine: The new JUNO-D series is built on the same ZEN-Core synthesis system found in Roland's top-tier models (like the Fantom series).
* Sample Quality: The piano sounds are derived from 88-note stereo multi-sampled waves, offering a realistic, high-quality tone.
* SuperNATURAL Sounds: While the core engine is ZEN-Core, the JUNO-D has access to a wide library of sounds that includes SuperNATURAL-type pianos.
* Data Compression: While the Fantom series uses uncompressed samples, the Juno D (and Fantom-0) use high-quality compressed versions of the same samples to fit within their memory constraints.
* Expandability: The JUNO-D allows for importing additional sounds via the Roland Cloud, including specialized acoustic and electric piano Wave Expansions.

Accompaniment:
Juno D has far better accompaniment than MODX M - arpeggios, chord recognition options are definitely present, and there is also a function to change the chords to "jazzy" or something else, which I find insanely good and interesting.

The U/I is the best I've ever seen, and is ages ahead of MODX M.

The pads also work differently:
You can activate/deactivate as many as you want at the same time, which is not possible with MODX M, and thus create the combinations you want, while MODX M requires that one and one be played; not all at once.

So in my opinion Juno D crushes MODX M to pieces.

I am wondering how many of those 1000 preset scenes might have rhythm/arp “phrases” vs. how
many of them are just sound combos. I was wondering this about Fantom as well. Go Keys 5 interests me because it’s clear what that does.

As far as I can tell, all 1000 preset scenes have rhythm/arp “phrases”.
There may be even more, but this is pure speculation.
