Today I received my new compression drivers for my small horns.

They look really good; precision CNC machined.

The connection terminals are good, but a little difficult to access, as they are recessed quite a bit.

The impedance curve I measured is very nice, and steadily rising slightly from about 6kHz, which makes it ideal for my purpose.

   


They are stated for use from 1kHz, but the FS is at 1189 Hz, and there are some problematic humps up to 2300 Hz, so they should be cut above this anyway.

The curve is almost completely straight from 10kHz to 20kHz, which is rare to see; almost all tweeters have an ugly curve around 17kHz.

This measurement was made with just the driver, and I will make 3 more; one with the horn mounted and one with the horn and compression membrane mounted, as well as one with a condenser in addition.

WOW !

The same measurement done with the horn mounted gave an insanely better result.

   


Now the impedance curve is steadily rising from just below 2kHz and up, and extremely smooth from 4kHz and up - in practice STRAIGHT from about 12kHz and up. WOW.

This is actually the nicest impedance curve I have ever seen, or at least measured..!

FIRST LISTENING TEST

With horns attached:

I always like to test a tweeter's capabilities at the very top of the frequency range first, so I used a 1.8µF capacitor, which cuts off at about 14-15kHz.

These drivers deliver absolutely well audible frequencies up to 20kHz..!

There are no negatives to note, and I can definitely cut them lower without problems.

More importantly:
The sound signature matches the existing ones.

Even though I now use the JBL drivers without their horns attached, I can say this with reasonable certainty.

I have some work left to do to restore the horns of the JBLs and make compression membranes, and also make compression membranes for the new ones and stands.
