BAD GEOMETRY = BAD CNC


   


I have worked for many years as a CNC operator, and know a little about geometry and how it is calculated.

Study the illustration, because it shows how poorly all things are calculated and produced today.

The first figure illustrates how wrongly all corners are rounded today - the radius is wrong; it is too large, resulting in the corner being too truncated.

The next figure also illustrates the wrong radius; it is too small, resulting in a defective product.

The last figure illustrates the correct radius, which gives perfectly rounded corners.
I don't have a picture because I couldn't find anything that is properly made anymore.

All industry today uses too large a radius when rounding corners, but why ?
Because this greatly simplifies production and allows different operations to be split up, while the final and precise rounding requires that everything be done in a single operation.

I almost feel sick when I study the bodywork of a new car, because none of the body panels follow each other's curves exactly.

It is the same with everything that is made with CNC, and this probably started when the digital world became common property.
Even the OASYS has poorly rounded pads.

If you study the graphics in any program, you will see the same thing everywhere; poorly rounded corners.

This is not how it should be done, but most people have lost any ability to critically judge quality.
