A GOOD POWER AMP, A GOOD PRE AMP AND GOOD SPEAKERS DO NOT NECESSARILY PLAY WELL TOGETHER

Near where I live, there are 2 stores that specialize in audio equipment.
One is a dealer for Bang & Olufsen, which has expanded its store to include state of the art from many of the most serious manufacturers on the market.
A single amplifier or speaker in his shop typically costs from several tens of thousands to several hundreds of thousands; he also sells cables that are just as expensive.
The problem is that the owner doesn't know what he's doing, because he thinks that as long as one component is superb, it plays superbly with another that is also superb.

It is not like that.

The other store is a store that also sells expensive equipment, but is run by a person who knows that components must fit together; no matter how good they are individually.
I have spent many hours in this shop, because the owner is a friend of mine, and learned a lot about sound and why it is bad or good.

Here follows a video that explains the complexity of putting together a sound system in a very explanatory and easy-to-understand way.

Chello. Good article and all very true and with the enjoyment trying for a better sound.
The problem being is we finish up never being satisfied but you do obtain increased knowledge.
In my early years I have been down this path many times.

@Graham

Thank you for finding my article interesting.
I know you have a lot of experience on the subject and it is always rewarding to receive affirmative comments.

I am now facing a new round in this cycle, as I have ordered both a new power and a new preamp - everything must (to a certain extent) be adapted again.

I am lucky to have had a reference set (Tandberg 3000 series) available when I built my horns, but there can still be huge differences between amplifiers, and not least when these are connected together.

This will be exciting, because I want to get proof of how good my horns actually are.
Purest Christmas Eve - with a bit of luck, I only need to slightly change the capacitor values in the speakers' 6 dB filters.
