Copying PARTS from one STYLE into another
#1
Copying PARTS from one STYLE into another

I have been asked how one ‘copies’ PARTS from one STYLE into another to make a ‘New Style’.  The first thing I have done is to listen to the many Yamaha STYLES I have in the PRESET section of my Tyros 4, and in particular I have listened to the individual PARTS that make up a Style.  I have already put up a topic on how to do this here:

https://chellos-keyboard-players-club.co...18021.html
Now these STYLES are your ‘band’ that accompany you when you are playing something, and Yamaha have very cleverly ‘blended’ together several instruments that make up the band you hear.  And on the whole, these instruments depend on each other to determine what notes they play .. like they would do in a real band.  So by extracting one of these instrumental PARTS and getting them to play solo somewhere else will only work if they are ‘stand alone’ parts, and are not parts that need to be blended with other members of the band.

What is needed for a ‘New Style’ is the creation of a ‘pattern’ of notes or rhythms that Yamaha haven’t already done.  A good example of this are the STYLES I used to play My Way in my topic on “Recording into a STYLE PART”.  Or perhaps Yamaha already have and I just didn’t find them.

https://chellos-keyboard-players-club.co...l#pid26168
Now it so happens that I do have a song I want a STYLE for ... Over The Rainbow.  Listening to some of the Styles in Country, I have found one called Country Pop that I can use.  You press the CHANNEL ON/OFF button to show all the PARTS.

But I have also found a very interesting guitar part in another Style that I would very much like to use ... CHD2 in MAIN VARIATION B in SingerSongWriter, also in Country.  And another ... PHR1 in MAIN VARIATION C in Let’sFunk in R&B.

Listen to the below, which is the guitar playing in CHD2 in SingerSongWriter.
https://audio.com/hugh-ar/audio/chd2-demo
And this one, below, is a ‘repeating piano’ in PHRASE1 in Let’sFunk.
https://audio.com/hugh-ar/audio/let-sfunkpart
So the plan is, first, to copy this CHD2 PART in MAIN VARIATION B in SingerSongWriter and put it into the PAD PART of CountryPop.  I have chosen PAD in CountryPop because, as I have explained before, I use a LEFT HAND VOICE and would be turning the PAD channel to OFF anyway, so have no need to keep it.  And by the way, it doesn’t really matter what type of recording you have in these channels (apart from the RHYTHM channels). PAD is usually a ‘continuous chord’ of some type .. to make it easier for you to find it.

Start by loading the main Style you are going to use into STYLE CREATOR.

The Style I shall be using is CountryPop (which is showing at the top); MAIN B.  The channel set up by default to record into is RHY2.  We don’t have to bother about this because we are not going to be doing a recording.

Tab across to ASSEMBLY and you will see this.

Again, you can see that RHYTHM2 is selected as this is the ‘default’.

We now have to select the channel we want our ‘copied’ PART to end up in (when we do it) .. which is PAD.  So press the button next to PAD, and you see this.

The highlighted CountryPop in PAD is where we are going to COPY TO.  Don’t take any notice of the COPY FROM underneath as we haven’t got there yet!

Next .. and this is the important bit!   Click that PAD slot again.  We are now going to head off to find the Style we want to COPY FROM.

The next screen we see is below.  This is where we can choose a Style from a STYLE CATEGORY.  The ones showing are the PRESET Styles.  There are tabs to the right you can clcik on to choose a Style from elsewhere.  On my Tyros 4 the tabs are USER, HD1 and USB1.

The STYLE I want to COPY a PART from is in Country in the PRESET section, so I am heading that way.

This is the one we want .. SingerSongWriter on Page 4.
So highlight that.

Now press the EXIT button ...

... and we get this screen.

It’s going to put a PART from SingerSongWriter into the the PAD Channel of CountryPop.  The COPY FROM showing at the bottom of the screen is now referring to the SingerSongWriter STYLE.  No, we don’t want to ‘copy’ from the PAD channel in SingerSongWriter.  We want to COPY FROM CHORD2 .. so move the CHANNEL marker up from PAD to CHORD2.  The PLAY TYPE has automatically changed to ON.

It’s now showing this.

You can see from this screen that you can in fact choose any CHANNEL to ‘copy’, from any of the SECTIONS A, B, C or D.  Just change the bars that are highlighted.

Second, I want to carry out exactly the same process to copy PHRASE1 from Let’sFunk (MAIN C) .. and put this into PHRASE2 of CountryPop.  Why PHRASE2?  Well, I listened to all the PARTS of CountryPop to see (or rather, hear!) which PART I could do without .. and for MAIN B there wasn’t anything in PHRASE2 anyway!

So press the PHRASE2 now to highlight it ...

... then press it again to bring up the categories of the PRESET STYLES.

This time we need R&B.  Look for Let’sFunk and highlight it.

Press the EXIT and the STYLE CREATOR screen will now look like this.

We’ve now got to tell it where in Let’sFunk to COPY FROM.
So change the SECTION and the CHANNEL to what is showing below (the PLAY TYPE will automatically change to ON).

Note that we now have two other Style Names showing in CountryPop .. and the program has been told where to COPY FROM in each case (which it hasn’t done yet).

Click on the SAVE showing on the right, and give your new STYLE a NAME in the usual way.  I am going to call mine OverRainbow as that is what I shall be using the Style to play.  Click the OK and your new STYLE will be saved in USER.

You are now taken back to the STYLE CREATOR page, and as you can see, the new STYLE NAME is showing at the top, and all the PARTS are now showing the name of your new Style.

Ignore what’s showing in the COPY FROM.  We have finished using that.

You can now just EXIT STYLE CREATOR.  Look for your STYLE in USER when you want to use it.  The PAD PART is the guitar riff from CHD2 of SingerSongWriter; the PHRASE2 PART is the repeating piano from PHRASE1 in Let’sFunk (MAIN C); and the rest of the channels are those from CountryPop.

Listen to the DEMO below to hear how the ‘New Style’ has turned out.

https://audio.com/hugh-ar/audio/overrainbowstyledemo
I really like that!  Particularly the ‘repeating piano’ which is added into the mix in the second part.

More to come.  Me playing Over The Rainbow so you can hear what the new STYLE sounds like in a practical situation.
It's all about the music!

I'm going to have a little rant now.

I have seen a suggestion that one should copy styles required into USER first so they are easy to find.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!  Why would you do that?  I looked at about 60 Yamaha STYLES to try and find a PART with a 'repeating piano' based on 4 beats in the bar rather than 'triplets', which is how I did mine for My Way.

Easier to find?  Well, NO.  Yes, they will then be in alphabetical order .. but mixed in with the 50 or so STYLES I have in there already.  And when I want to find the STYLE I want to put into STYLE CREATOR, do you think I would remember the name of it?  Forgotten the names SingerSongWriter and Let'sFunk already (had to look them up to write them here!).

I know STYLES are not easy to find when they are in those different STYLE CATEGORIES .. and when you get there they are not in alphabetical order.  But when I find a STYLE I want to work with I write down on a piece of paper the NAME of the STYLE, the CATEGORY it is in .. and the PAGE NUMBER to find it.  That is much easier than looking through USER when I can't remember the name of the STYLE.

Then once I have used the bits of those PRESET STYLES to make my OverRainbow STYLE, would I leave them sitting there in USER clogging my keyboard up with STYLES I have no need of to use again?  My OverRainbow STYLE is in USER, and that's where I want it .. and not cluttered up with STYLES from PRESET.  USER is definitely an area for STYLES I USE, and looking through them I recognise all the names as I put them there specifically for me to use for songs.

I'll get off my high horse now!

Hugh

Well, I have set up a REGISTRATION BANK to play Over The Rainbow.
I am using my OverRainbow STYLE as created above, and for the Verse I want to just have that guitar ‘riff’ I put into PAD (from SingerSongWriter) together with the RHYTHM .. so have turned all the other PARTS to OFF as per the below.

Then for the Chorus I want to hear that ‘repeating piano’ I put into PHRASE2 (from Let’sFunk) plus all the other PARTS .. but not the guitar riff in PAD .. so have set the CHANNEL ON/OFF as per the below to play the Chorus.

But then, when I tried to play the song and switched from the first REGISTRATION MEMORY to the second .. it wouldn’t keep going to the end of the bar, but changed immediately I hit the button.  Can't be having that!  This needs investigating!

Click this LINK below to read what I found out about what should happen when changing from one REGISTRATION MEMORY to another.

https://chellos-keyboard-players-club.co...l#pid26294
I came to the conclusion that when creating my OverRainbow STYLE I had only created a VARIATION B, so I was flitting from VARIATION B to VARIATION B.  I need to put this guitar ‘riff’ from SingerSongWriter into PAD in VARIATION A.

Same steps as before, but I have started by loading OverRainbow VARIATION A from USER into SONG CREATOR.

Move across to ASSEMBLY and highlight where I want it to go (remember that from this point on we are dealing with MAIN A).

Press the highlighted channel again to choose where to COPY FROM.

Press the EXIT button, and change the SECTION to MAIN B; and the CHANNEL to CHORD 2.

Note that this time we are in the OverRainbow STYLE (and are doing MAIN A).

Click on the SAVE on the right.  Keep the same name .. OverRainbow, and click OK.  It will say, “Name already exists. Do you want to overwrite?”.  Click YES.

We have now replaced the OverRainbow STYLE that only had our MAIN B (the other VARIATIONS were the originals from CountryPop) with one that has our MAIN A and our MAIN B.

So I have set my REGISTRATION BANK up with OverRainbow MAIN A playing the Verse; and OverRainbow MAIN B playing the Chorus.  So moving from MAIN A to MAIN B, so long as I press the change of REGISTRATION MEMORY after the second beat of the bar, it will continue to the end of the bar before actually changing.

Does it heck!  The REGISTRATION changed as soon as I pressed the button.
Have a listen to what actually happened.

https://audio.com/hugh-ar/audio/overrainbowregchange

After all this effort!  I am tearing my hair out in frustration!  (Not that I have much to tear out!)

In my next post I’ll explain how I overcame this situation and actually got a REGISTRATION BANK so I could play Over The Rainbow.
It's all about the music!

What I thought I would try next is to have two different STYLES, and then according to my Topic “When can you trigger a Registration Change” I should be able to switch from one REGISTRATION to the next by pressing the button any time after the 1st beat of the bar .. and for the first STYLE to continue playing until the end of the bar.

So I have COPIED my OverRainbow STYLE onto a Memory Stick, and RENAMED it OverRainbow2.  Then COPIED OverRainbow2 and PASTED it back into USER.  So I now have two different STYLES in USER.

But ... but ... I hear you say.  These are the same STYLE, but with two different names!  True.  But the keyboard doesn’t know that!  It sees two different names and treats them as two different Styles.  And it works!  At last!  I can trigger a Registration change and the keyboard will keep the first Style going until the end of the bar.

These are the REGISTRATION setups for the two pages that were causing me a problem.

So here (at last!) is my version of Over The Rainbow using the STYLE I created above.

https://audio.com/hugh-ar/audio/overtherainbow
More to come (yes!). In my next post I will do a complete analysis of how I balanced the STYLE; the VOICES I chose (and their VOLUMES); and will write out the chords I used for the harmony.

I have set up four REGISTRATION MEMORIES.

REGISTRATION MEMORIES 1 & 2 are using the STYLE OverRainbow.
Using the Mixing Console (press it twice to show the STYLE PARTS) ..

.. the VOLUMES for each PART are set as below. Note that the VOLUME of PAD (the guitar riff) is 60.  All the other PARTS apart from the RHYTHM are OFF anyway.

LEFT is DarkFatSaw at a VOLUME of 60; LEFT HOLD is ON.
This LEFT VOICE is the same in all four Registration Memories.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 1
RIGHT 1 is Whistle, VOLUME 100.  The Whistle is set to MONO.

To get the Whistle to ‘glide’ from one note to another is a ‘playing technique’.  To get it to ‘glide’ where you want it to, you hold down the first note and then play the second note.  Then release the first note.  The ‘glide’ will not happen unless the voice is set to MONO.  If you don't want any 'glide', release the first note before playing the second.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 2
RIGHT 1 is DarkFatSaw, VOLUME 127 (Max).
RIGHT 2 is WhisperGallery, VOLUME 80.
PANPOT .. DarkFatSaw 10 to the left; WhisperGallery 10 to the right.

DSP is ON.

REGISTRATION MEMORIES 3 & 4 are using the STYLE OverRainbow2.
The VOLUMES for each PART are set as below. Note that the VOLUME of PHRASE2 (the ‘repeating piano’) is 45.  PAD (the guitar riff) is switched OFF.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 3
RIGHT 1 is Vibraphone, VOLUME 80.

REGISTRATION MEMORY 4
RIGHT 1 is Whistle, VOLUME 100.  The Whistle is set to MONO.

Ending is ENDING I.

The CHORDS I am playing for Over The Rainbow are below.

VERSE
/ G - Em - / Bm - - G /
/ C - Gdim7 - / G - GM7 G7 /
/ C - Cm - / G - E7 - /
/ Am - D7 - / G - - - /

CHORUS
/ G – G6 - / Am – D7 - /
/ G6 - - - / D7sus4 - D7 - /
/ G – G6 - / F#7 - - - /
/ Bm - - - / D7 - - - /

I have attached a musical score for anyone who would like the above chords written on 'Busker type' sheet music.

Hugh

Edit to my previous post .. some sheet music attached for Over The Rainbow.  As I 'play by ear', the harmony is my own.  Feel free to add/change the chords to something that sounds more suitable to what you want to play.  I find a red felt tip pen a very handy tool for doing something like this.

Also ... dare I ask?

I would very much appreciate if other Members who play could record and post their version of this song .. and not necessarily using the STYLE created in this topic.  Any STYLE will do!

The YouTube clip below is the original by Judy Garland from The Wizard of Oz ...

.. and this next one (which I just love to listen to) is by Eva Cassidy singing and playing her guitar.
Her harmony is amazing.

Jon,

Thanks for posting that.  It's amazing how different you can get a song to sound when you have your musician's hat on!

Hearing this has reminded me of how you get a 'lift' to your music when you play something 'fast'.  I'll start a new thread about what you do.
