Pa5X tutorial: Convert Yamaha styles to Korg styles

In this video I will show you how easy it is to convert Yamaha styles to full Korg Pa5X styles (works also the same on the korg pa4x).

We will take a Yamaha song style and convert that in realtime to a Korg song style.

I've also added a quick section of how to mix a style in realtime (see 13:47 and further)

timetable
00:00 DEMO: See See Rider
00:32 converting a yamaha style to korg
04:10 setting the correct korg labels
07:30 export to a korg midi file
09:00 create the style on the korg Pa5X
13:47 mixing stage: modify the levels and effects
18:22 DEMO: end result

you don't have to use cubase for this, xgstyles works also or the free Reaper DAW works also, as long as you can set the Markers, then it will work.

Rob
I'm not going to use Cubase or others, because I don't like working with DAWs.
I use Style Works as I have for a long time, which is very easy for me.

I think that the conversion of the style is rather easy, it's just a trick that can be followed.

But you are right that there is a section in the video that looks easy but is actually really hard to do when you do it yourself. That is the part where I set the mix levels and do some basic EQ-ing and effects assignments, this is much harder then it looks. The steps itself aren't hard to do, but the decisions that you have to make of what to do is a matter of experience, and takes a long time to build that experience with time spent on lot's of experiments. But it's fun and really convenient once you have developed that skill. You can instantly add your own sound ideas to any source material that way.

I have just watched the tutorial, very helpful and well presented.

Im wondering how well this would work with one of the Yamaha Free Play Styles.

For reference I found these screenshots from a video from a while back.

I noticed when you remixed this style you used the bass track at maximum volume and the drum , percussion tracks below that.

Is this usually the case when balancing style tracks?

I always thought it was the other way round to have the bass track below the drum track.

No normally this is not the case, but in this style the bass velocity was quite low, so I had to compensate that with the mixer level.

You can hear the original conversion at 13:47, and you hear that the style is converted but it doesn't have that Pa5X sound quality, so the levels and the basic effect programming did wonders for that style. The end result is at 18:23

So even though there are some guidelines, eventually you will have to use your ears and experience to set the levels in such a way that a balanced sound is reached.

So in this tutorial I only showed the basics, but there is so much more to learn in the pa5x style editor to get an even better representation of the played midi parts. For instance when I converted the taylor swift song (see that demo in the members performances) , the bassline plays a Low A and when you go to the G note it plays the G note an octave higher in the  song style conversion. Where in the original song the G note is one note lower played then the A.

This is caused by the way the style editor is setup, so you have to modify that settings to get the result you want (in this case you can do this with the Track style edit / Wrap around feature. But also things like chords pad sounds or piano's those can sometimes also behave strangely based on the chord on you play, the way to solve that is to use NTT Fixed Chord mode. This way the chord structures are kept the same as played.

So these are two examples of things you can use to get even better representations of your own created or converted styles. And there is so much more to learn there. It's extremely powerful once you understand the Style editor.
