Some great music played on a Genos 2

It’s not often that I find keyboard music that is played the way I like to hear it .. but I have picked up a Thread put up by musicalmemoriesuk in response to a query from Fikke about a Power Pack for Genos 2.

https://chellos-keyboard-players-club.co...4#pid29174
The video I have been watching is the second one ..

Genos 2 Power Pack – The Registrations

He plays from REGISTRATIONS.
REGISTRATION 1 is always the INTRO; and REGISTRATION 10 (the last one) the ENDING.

What I enjoyed listening to was his selection of songs (all ones I knew); the perfect ‘balance’ he had between the VOICES and the STYLE used; and how he changed the REGISTRATION as he went along to introduce a new VOICE. He probably did this too often for most .. but then this is a DEMO and he was trying to show off all the different combinations of sound you could get. Another great thing about this video is that you can see quite clearly the chords he is playing .. and he played most of the songs in ‘sensible’ keys like C, F and G.

What I always have a problem with when playing a new song is finding VOICES that sound great with the STYLE being used. Listening to and watching this video has given me plenty of ideas to try.

Judging from the quality of the recordings, he would have used ‘direct’ recordings from the Genos 2 in the video .. hence no talking while he is playing.

Many (many) years ago (1990?) we were in an Italian Restaurant in Bristol .. when Van Morrison came in. He was appearing at the Bristol Hippodrome that night, and one of the songs he was going to sing was Have I Told You Lately. We were in Bristol to go to an organ concert elsewhere, so missed out on seeing him that night.

Lovely song .. and whitecolin1 has just posted his version of this, here:

Many (many) years ago (1990?) we were in an Italian Restaurant in Bristol .. when Van Morrison came in. He was appearing at the Bristol Hippodrome that night, and one of the songs he was going to sing was Have I Told You Lately. We were in Bristol to go to an organ concert elsewhere, so missed out on seeing him that night.

Lovely song .. and whitecolin1 has just posted his version of this, here:
Looking on YouTube, I have found another beautiful version of this, played on piano by Carl Doy.

There must be many times that I have been listening to a song I know .. but can’t remember the Title of it (or who sang it!). If I knew the name of the song I could go listen to it on YouTube .. and have a go at playing it on my keyboard.

So here is something I have just been told about by my daughter-in-law. No doubt you (reading this) have known about it for months/years!

I have an android mobile phone (a Samsung), and as this is an Apple product I wouldn’t have thought it would have worked on my android phone. How wrong I was!

I have been to the Play Store and downloaded the App Shazam (it’s FREE). I had to give it permission to ‘record’ (to get it to work); but have blocked ‘Notifications’.

 MobileScreenshot1.jpg (Size: 23.95 KB / Downloads: 66)

When you have some music playing, tap the Shazam App .. and you get this:

 MobileScreenshot2.jpg (Size: 12.23 KB / Downloads: 60)

Tap the middle of the circle.

The first piece of music I tried it on, it came up with this in just a few seconds.

 MobileScreenshot3.jpg (Size: 25.36 KB / Downloads: 62)

If you want the LYRICS, tap on that and they’ll come up.

The next song I tried it on it came up with this.

 MobileScreenshot4.jpg (Size: 25.35 KB / Downloads: 64)

So next time I am in a Restaurant I won’t have to ask the waitress what music they have playing .. I’ll just use the Shazam App on my mobile.

By the way .. this only works with original Artistes (which presumably have to be in their Database). It’s not picking up the ‘melody’ of a song, so it won’t pick up something you are playing on your keyboard and tell you what song you are playing.
No, this is not Fawlty Towers, but sometimes it very well could be. Most of our guests are perfectly ordinary folk, but we do get some funny ones. Like that lot in March who were Yamaha AR organ fanatics!
Bronwyn had trained as a chef many years previously so with her culinary skills and my leanings towards the "office" side of things it seemed a perfect combination. Also, we had both had a dabble with DIY which is fairly essential if the place is going to be kept looking at its best. (ie. Bronwyn cuts and pastes the wallpaper, and I hang it!)
We envisaged some really nice wallpaper and matching bedspreads, but the comment was "Well, the guests come in with their cans and bottles of beer. They shake them up, then open them ... and spray the walls, doors etc. Then at the end of the season we get a scrubbing brush and dowse it all down, get the roller out with the pot of emulsion and just roll over everything ready for the next season." !!

Then another place. It was obviously the last morning of the lady being open and we had come to take a look around. She invited us in and asked if we would mind just waiting a minute while she carried out a "ritual" that she did at the end of every season. Her laundry bag was right up on the top floor. She balanced it on the edge of the first step and gave it a good kick. Then another, and then another. And as she came down the stairs she was muttering "That's the last one gone. That's the last one gone." She then said "Right, I feel better now!". By this time we were really wondering what we were letting ourselves in for!
Love the way they have done this. Nice bit of the two of them singing in harmony.

Inspired me to have a go at this on my Yamaha AR80 organ (which I don’t have any more). The Yamaha AR80 organ recorded to floppy disk with three ‘channels’, which you could record separately .. Upper Manual, Lower Manual and Pedals. I recorded the below by playing the piano backing with two hands on the LOWER .. and then whilst listening to that as it played back, recorded the melody on the UPPER. No PEDAL track.

What do the three pedals on a grand piano do?

When I started playing piano in my early teens I knew the right hand pedal as the ‘loud’ pedal. This is also known as the sustain pedal, or damper pedal, and allows notes to continue sounding after the key is released. It works by lifting the dampers off the strings, allowing them to vibrate freely. The notes will continue to sound until the vibration stops or the pedal is released.

The one thing that seems to be overlooked is that when the dampers are taken off all the strings, other strings vibrate ‘in sympathy’ with the note(s) being played .. which alters the tonal quality of the piano and makes it sound ‘richer’.

The left hand pedal is called the ‘soft’ pedal, and on an upright piano it brings all the hammers closer to the strings so they don’t play as ‘forcefully’. On a grand piano it is done differently, which I discovered when having access to a ‘baby grand’ in a holiday cottage on the Isle of Wight .. which, I might add, came as quite a shock! See the video below.

As for the ‘middle’ pedal .. Victor Borge, pianist and comedian, was asked about the pedal in the middle, and famously said, “Well, the pedal in the middle is there to separate the other two.”
On our keyboards we don’t have that ‘middle pedal’ and I often wonder if we get ‘classical piano music’ to sound as the composer intended. Chopin made frequent use of the pedal, and through an intuition born of genius he knew when to press it as well as when to release it.
Apart from Victor Borge’s piano comedy, he is probably best known from these two skits on the English language.
