CAPACITOR TEST - VERY SURPRISING RESULTS

My JBL horns are connected in series, so that the impedance is doubled from 6.6 Ohm to 13.2 Ohm.

This is to reduce efficiency, as they are extremely sensitive compared to the rest of the units used in the horns.

This also has all advantages in terms of sound, as the power amplifier works much easier in 13.2 Ohm compared to 6.6 Ohm, and THD (third harmonic distortion) is drastically reduced.

Many years of experience in building loudspeakers have taught me that the simplest crossover is always the best, if you are very careful to choose units that are good enough to withstand a simple filter and its soft crossover and subsequent greater power allocation to the unit.

Some time ago I acquired some relatively expensive capacitors from Jantzen Audio; a Superior Z-Cap of 18 µF 800 Volts and a MKP Cross Cap of 33 µF 400 Volts, which were connected in parallel, giving a crossover of 6 dB at 240 Hz.

This filter worked brilliantly in terms of effects and everything else, but human voices were a little too shrill at high levels, which is a well-known problem with horn systems, by the way.

This was with my MBL preamplifier, and with my new FM Acoustics preamplifier the tendency was reduced, but I wanted to reduce the tendency further.

So I did the following:
I disconnected the Superior Z-Cap capacitor, so that only the MKP Cross Cap was connected, which gave a crossover of 6 dB at 370 Hz.

The result was clearly better than before, with better reproduction of human voices.

Next, I tried the same with the Superior Z-Cap, and was very surprised that this gave about the same result as with both connected, although the crossover frequency was now raised to 680 Hz.

This reveals a merciless truth:
The MKP Cross Cap has better sound characteristics than the Superior Z-Cap, which is significantly more expensive..!

For several decades I have used Sidereal capacitors before these Jantzen capacitors, with which I have exclusively good experiences.

Today it is possible to get hold of these very cheap from AliExpress, and I will order all relevant values and test these against Jantzen - it would not surprise me if Sidereal are the best.

The FM Acoustics FM 255 MK2 is said to be one of the best preamplifiers in the world.

FM Acoustics is known for using large resources to measure up to identical values on all components where many components must have the same value.

Lyele Audio DIY has really done everything to recreate everything as authentically as possible, and some components are actually better than the originals.

This clone has received absolutely fantastic reviews from many independent owners, who are used to very expensive equipment - it is often compared to the Mark Levinson ML-7A, and many believe that certain sessions are better reproduced with the FM 255 clone.

* I have tested FM 255 with the power amplifier FM Acoustics FM 300A.

THE TEST:
IMMEDIATE IMPRESSION DESIGN/BUILD QUALITY:
This amplifier immediately impresses out of the box; everything appears extremely well made - it is understandable that it cost $45,000 as a new original.

Everything LOOKS fantastic, but the RCA connectors are of variable precision; some are very precise, while others give a slightly looser contact - not good.

In addition, the amplifier requires that ALL other amplifiers be OFF when it is turned on, because there was a loud bang in the subwoofer because its amplifiers were on when I turned it on.
It is easy to forget this the first time, but I do not intend to make the same mistake again.

This also means that you have to be very attentive when sudden power outages occur, to remember to turn off the power amplifiers before the power comes back.

All switches and potentiometers are of the highest quality, except the Balance potentiometer, which is of standard quality.

IMMEDIATE IMPRESSION SOUND QUALITY:
I hooked it up to the FM Acoustics FM 300A power amplifier.
EVERYTHING appears unusually clear:

Something completely new (and unexpected) is that there is ALMOST no digital noise with the DAC, even though I haven't connected the USB Isolator..!
For the first time there is almost no digital noise, which means that this amplifier is exceptionally well shielded from noise - I only hear it if I form funnels with my hands over my ears without music playing with the volume control at 12 o'clock

The sub-bass goes a lot deeper - I had turned the volume down a lot, but still low frequencies (10-20Hz) are MUCH stronger, plus there are new sounds I have never heard before
The bass from the bottom up is much more clearly resolved with precise touches

All instruments are better separated from each other

All instruments appear with more detail - I perceive new details in the entire frequency range

The perspective and three-dimensionality are much wider and more precise than before

The amount of ambience around each instrument is extremely higher than before

The dynamics are insanely higher; about the same as without a preamp - actually even better..!
All this happens even at very low levels, and I can play reasonably loud without the sound becoming shrill, which is typical of horn systems.

Another unusual thing is that there is zero need to adjust bass or treble via tone controls, which has always been necessary from time to time in the past.

CONCLUSION:
This is an insanely good preamp; far better than my previous MBL.

It is also proof that there is something to be gained from using matched amplifiers from the same series - this amplifier set is well known to be one of the best on the market, and these clones are no exception.

And even better:
I don't have to adjust the speakers' crossovers, which has always been necessary before - everything works (almost) the way I want.
Only a slightly higher crossover of the JBL horns can be usefully tried to dampen human voices a little.

Also, digital noise is almost non-existent for the first time ever - it will be fun to test the sound card and hear if the same applies to this.

It is incredibly rewarding to listen to music I have listened to for decades with all kinds of equipment, and experience that there are details I have never heard before - on EVERY recording..!

This also applies to the Kronos and Pa5X - they appear even more dynamic and alive than before; even more so than with the STAX headset.

I'm now quite busy with many pleasant things at once:

* I've only had Kronos for a short time, and have planned an extensive reprogramming of its contents.

* A new foot pedal for the Pa5X has been ordered, and I'm thinking of mounting this in a way never seen before, since it is extremely location-friendly and without a cable.

* A new sound card has been acquired, but not connected yet.

* A new preamplifier is expected to arrive tomorrow, which will probably require adjustments to all equipment.

* It is also possible that I will have to reconfigure the crossovers for the horns.

* New USB Isolators for each device have been ordered, which will hopefully reduce/remove all digital noise if necessary.

* All future recordings will, when everything is set up again, be made with Kronos in Wave format, and this is actually easier than with the Pa5X and its idiotic and useless Mp3.

DIGITAL NOISE

For a long time I thought I was the only one bothered by this.

I first noticed the problem when USB was launched - everything based on this had an intolerable noise that was especially annoying around 15kHz to 25kHz.

Many claim that bad USB cables are the cause, but I have replaced all of them with expensive versions - without ANY change.

However, there are several factors that come into play, such as the individual's ability to perceive such high frequencies - most people over 37 have severely reduced hearing above 10kHz, while I am "blessed" (or cursed..?) with being able to hear frequencies up to 25kHz or higher.

Secondly, very few people have speakers that are capable of reproducing such high frequencies, while I have had them for many years.

A good DAC/AAC that handles 24 bit (or more) is also necessary.

Thirdly, there are not many recordings that have such high frequencies, and all Mp3 is excluded, while Wave and FLAC can have them, and DSD/SACD is the best, with 24 bit - or higher.
It is important to know that Wave and FLAC are often only 16 bit (CD "quality"), which gives a greatly reduced resolution compared to 24 bit.

A lot of recordings that are available as SACD/Wave/FLAC are actually 16 bit Wave that has been "converted" to 24 bit SACD/Wave/FLAC, which means that they are only 16 bit - it is practically impossible to increase the bitrate by conversion - well-trained ears hear this immediately.

Back to the point:
Digital noise.
I have experienced digital noise for years, even with quality products such as the AUNE S6 DAC and MOTU M4 AAC, which both support 32 bit.
Both of these have the best chips on the market installed.

Another source of problem is the amplifiers used; are these analog or digital ?
Analog amplifiers such as tube are the worst of all, as they act as an antenna to digital noise - mobile phones and the like emit an extreme amount of digital noise.

Ordinary analog ones that are particularly well shielded can work quite well, while digital ones that are very well shielded are the only ones that work well enough.

Digital amplifiers with poor shielding are a nightmare.

So how to solve the problem ?

The most effective thing is to place the PC as far away from the program sources as possible, while I pretty much have to have the PC placed close, which maximizes the problem.

So other solutions have to be tried, and the only effective one is USB Isolation.

Some time ago I acquired one of these, and this works quite well with the AUNE DAC, but has no effect on the MOTU AAC, probably because this gets power via USB C.

I have recently acquired a new sound card, which is also USB C based, and have also ordered special USB Isolators for both USB B and C, which can be connected to each device.

Hopefully these will reduce the noise to a tolerable level.

I have planned a test of this new sound card, but will have to wait until I receive the USB Isolators.
I will get back to the subject as soon as possible.
