YAMAHA TO KORG PA5X - COMPLETE COMPATIBILITY TEST
#1
Information
YAMAHA TO KORG PA5X - COMPLETE COMPATIBILITY TEST

I have used the latest version of EMC Style Works XT Universal, and configured this to Pa4X, which is the only one that works for this task.

First of all I downloaded original styles from all of Yamaha's models from a secure source (PSR Tutorials).
I chose one and the same style from the Dance category from all models in order to achieve the most equal conditions - some models had to use a different style, as the range has changed over the years.

Then I created 3 folders for each style; a main folder, a SET folder and a STYLE folder, where the SET folder was put in the main folder, and the STYLE folder was added in the SET folder.
This is absolutely necessary for Pa5X to understand the content.

Finally, all the main folders must be put on a USB stick's main root - NOT in a main folder, because then only one style is installed, although Pa5X says Import completed with success - there is no file; all installed folders are empty except for one.

Those who try to do this are sure to scratch their heads, because one more thing needs to be done in another way:
Once a SET is installed, the style(s) must be copied onto the USB stick or SD card, and then the installed SET must be deleted via the PC connection.
If this is not done, all subsequently installed SETs folders will become empty.

This involves quite a bit of extra work, but is absolutely necessary for success.
For this reason, I predict that styles for Pa5X won't be made with Style Works for the future, as most people won't understand how this is done, and if they understand it, they won't be able to handle all the work.
As it stands, Korg has every opportunity to create a program that can convert other brands' styles to Pa5X, and if they do this, it is tantamount to liquidation, because no one has created a program similar to Style Works.

Anyway, here are my results:

PSR-SX900 TO PA5X (Used style: Clubdance1)
*Style quality: Lousy, but can be reasonably good with a lot of editing
*Choice of sounds for the style: Miserable - drumtracks were assigned percussion and SFX
*Balance of style parts: Miserable in spite of OK levels - 6 tracks at 110 and 2 at 100
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Very good
*Pads assimilated ? NO
*DSP effects assimilated ? NO
*EQ correction assimilated ? NO
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: High - NOT PASSED
Special note:
It is actually possible to find drum kits both for drums and percussion that work without noises.
This is very surprising and says a lot about how complex Pa5X is - no other keyboards on the market can do this.
At the same time, a fading effect between the left and right channels on ACC3 was intact, which is also surprising.
6 tracks were assigned GM, while 2 received no GM and were inactivated.
It was very difficult to find a suitable bass.
Something that has never happened before happened when I started the style:
All tracks were corrected to 110, and all tracks were assigned to GM.

PSR-S975 TO PA5X (Used style: Clubdance1)
*Style quality: Lousy, but can be reasonably good with a lot of editing
*Choice of sounds for the style: Miserable -  drumtracks were assigned GM drums and percussion
*Balance of style parts: Miserable in spite of OK levels - 6 tracks at 110 and 2 at 100
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Very good
*Pads assimilated ? NO
*DSP effects assimilated ? NO
*EQ correction assimilated ? NO
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: High - NOT PASSED
Special note:
Fading effect between the left and right channels on ACC4 was intact, which is surprising.
6 tracks were assigned GM, while 2 received no GM and were inactivated.
It was not so difficult to find a suitable bass.
Something that has never happened before happened when I started the style:
All tracks were corrected to 110, and all tracks were assigned to GM.

The difference from the SX900 to the S975 is surprisingly small, but after all, it uses a sound engine from the same family as the SX-900 and Genos. However, the sound difference is very large between the SX-900 and S975.

GENOS TO PA5X (Used style: Clubdance1)
Identical to the SX900.

PSR-S970 TO PA5X (Used style: Clubdance1)
Identical to the S975.
This is very strange, because the S970 uses a sound engine from the same family as the Tyros5.
The explanation must be sought in Styles Works, which is obviously incorrectly programmed for the S970.

TYROS5 TO PA5X (Used style: Clubdance1)
Identical to the SX900.
This is very strange to say the least, because the Tyros5 uses a different sound engine than the SX900.
The explanation must be sought in Styles Works, which is very obviously incorrectly programmed for Tyros5. The sound is slightly different as some sounds are different.

NOTE: Style Works version 4.83 is used from here onwards.
PSR-S950 TO PA5X (Used style: Clubdance1)
*Style quality: Bad
*Choice of sounds for the style: Bad
*Balance of style parts: Bad
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Bad, style is to low
*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? NO
*EQ correction assimilated ? NO
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Bad - many errors
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: High - NOT PASSED
Special note:
This style will also be identical to the SX900's style.
This is certainly entirely on the wits, because the S950 uses an sound engine from the same family as the Tyros4.
The explanation must again be sought in Styles Works, which is very obviously very incorrectly programmed for the S950.
This makes me remember that Style Works' versions from before the update to Genos/Pa4X and after give very different results for older models.
Continued testing therefore requires downgrading Style Works from version 4.999 to version 4.83 for Tyros4/Pa3X.

The old version for Style Works means that even weirder things happen:

The new version provided a file size of 52KB, while the old one provides 505KB. Pa5X reboots when I try to import S950 for Pa3X. I try one more time after restarting, and then the import works.
32 styles were imported, of which also the current one - the others are standard Korg styles.

It gets even sicker - everything is turned upside down:
7 instead of previous 6 tracks are active, volume is more varied and lower with max 110, varying panning for ACC4 is active in Variation4, and all pads are active at too high volume. The sound is generally much worse and cannot be obtained well enough by changing sounds.

TYROS4 TO PA5X (Style used: Clubdance1)
*Style quality: Bad
*Choice of sounds for the style: Bad
*Balance of style parts: Bad
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Bad, style is to low
*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: High - NOT PASSED
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro are added, but the sound is cruel, and cannot be fixed.

PSR-S910 TO PA5X (Style used: ClubHouse)
*Style quality: Very bad
*Choice of sounds for the style: Very bad
*Balance of style parts: Very bad
*Balance between style and Fills: Bad, style is to low

*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Colossally numerous and serious harmonic failures
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: High - NOT PASSED
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro have been added, but the sound is more than gruesome and cannot be fixed.

TYROS3 TO PA5X (Style used: Clubdance1)

*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: High - NOT PASSED
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro, except that Intro2 and Ending2 are not set up as neutral. Terrible sound; especially for guitars. Not worth fixing.

TYROS2 TO PA5X (Style used: Clubhouse)
*Style quality: Good
*Choice of sounds for the style: Good
*Balance of style parts: Good, but need some adjustments

*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: Medium
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro, and the second best result so far - only the 9000Pro is better. Might be fine with a little work.

PSR-3000 TO PA5X (Style used: Clubdance)
*Style quality: Good
*Choice of sounds for the style: Good
*Balance of style parts: Good, but need some adjustments
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good

*Style quality: Good
*Choice of sounds for the style: Good
*Balance of style parts: Good
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good

*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: Medium
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro, and equally good as the S900. Might be fine with a little work.

TYROS1 TO PA5X (Style used: Clubdance)
*Style quality: Good
*Choice of sounds for the style: Good
*Balance of style parts: Good, but need some adjustments
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good

*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: Medium
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro, and almost as good as the S900. Might be fine with a little work.
Additional note: The quality of the Tyros1 to Pa5X is much better than with Pa4X/Pa3X.

PSR-2000 TO PA5X (Style used: Clubdance)
*Style quality: Good
*Choice of sounds for the style: Good
*Balance of style parts: Good
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Bad, style is to low
*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low

PSR-9000PRO TO PA5X (Used style: Clubdance)
*Style quality: Excellent
*Choice of sounds for the style: Excellent
*Balance of style parts: Excellent
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Bad, style is to low
*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: Minimum - PASSED
Special note:
3 tracks in Intro now have varying panning for percussion, ACC1 and ACC2, varying panning in Variations and Fills ACC1 and ACC2, added EQ, added Master FX as well as added MFX Send. As if all this isn't enough, Intro2 (and Ending2?) is also programmed as neutral, just like internal Pa styles are.

This is a Yamaha style, and this should not be possible, because Yamaha does not program like that.

PSR-550 TO PA5X (Styles used: Clubdance)
*Style quality: Very good
*Choice of sounds for the style: Very good
*Balance of style parts: Very good
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Bad, style is to low
*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Errors in Intro 1 and Ending 1
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: NOT PASSED
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro, and almost equally good. Unfortunately, Intro 1 and Ending 1 are incorrectly converted, giving incorrect harmonies for these.

PSR-9000 TO PA5X (Style used: Club Dance)
*Style quality: Excellent
*Choice of sounds for the style: Excellent
*Balance of style parts: Excellent
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Bad, style is to low
*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: Minimum - PASSED
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro - equal sound.

PSR-740 TO PA5X (Style used: Clubdance)
*Style quality: Excellent
*Choice of sounds for the style: Excellent
*Balance of style parts: Excellent
*Balance between style and Fills: Very good
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Bad, style is to low
*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: Minimum - PASSED
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro - equal sound.
Slightly better mixed than the 9000Pro/9000.
Fills need to be specially adjusted, as some sounds are way too high.

PSR-8000 TO PA5X (Style used: CLB1)
*Style quality: Good
*Choice of sounds for the style: Good
*Balance of style parts: Good
*Balance between style and Fills: Bad, style is to low
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Excellent
*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, pads are to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Harmonies work normally
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: Medium
Special note:
The same parameters as for the 9000Pro - the sound quality is somewhat lower than that of Tyros1.
Best mixed of all.
Pads need to be adjusted, as these are generally too low.
Variations 1/2 and 3/4 are identical, because 8000 has only 2 variations.

PSR-730 TO PA5X (Style used: EuroHouse)
*Style quality: Excellent
*Choice of sounds for the style: Excellent
*Balance of style parts: Excellent
*Balance between style and Fills: Excellent
*Balance between style and Keyboard Sets: Bad, style is to low
*Pads assimilated ? YES
*Balance between style and pads: Bad, style is to low
*DSP effects assimilated ? YES
*EQ correction assimilated ? YES
*Harmonious correctness/complexity: Errors in Intros
*Workload needed to achieve a good enough style: Medium - NOT PASSED
Special note:
This model offers some surprises, as the mixing is among the best.
At the same time, all Variations are different, although this model only has 2 Variations original.
All Intros have a very high volume, plus the harmonies don't work quite as they should for Intros.
