TEST OF KORG PA5X 76 - PART 3; IMPORT FEATURES
#1
Thumbs Up
TEST OF KORG PA5X 76 - PART 3; IMPORT FEATURES

I have now started testing how Pa5X's import functions work.

Let me be clear about one thing:
Import has almost never worked properly on previous models; especially as far as Pa2X and Pa3X are concerned.

I have chosen SETs that I know from before and that have not worked satisfactorily with Pa2X/Pa3X/Pa4X.

Let me again be clear about one thing:
Importing has never worked as well as with Pa5X, and never so easy.

A more detailed description of procedures and results will soon be provided.

START OF TEST:

The first SET I try to install is the AD&MC Korg Pa900 SET, which is not original and comes from Romania.
This contains the GLOBAL, MULTISMP, PAD, PCM, PERFORM, SONGBOOK, SOUND, and STYLE folders with Favorites 1-2.

By pressing the FILE button and then the MENU button, I get the window which among other things shows IMPORT.
Press IMPORT, and select the main folder (SET) - not any of the others, because only the SET main folder will be accepted.
Pressed OK.

After just over 5 minutes, the message shows Import failed: connection error.
Pressed EXIT 2 times to exit the menu.

When I check DRIVE, it turns out that both Favorite 1 and Favorite 2 have been installed, but when I start a style, strings hang up, and the keyboard needs to be restarted.
After restart, some styles start normally, while others don't want to start, and strings hang up with everyone who starts - another restart required.
NOT APPROVED

Test 2: BonusPA4X-1-42.SET, originality is uncertain, and it is downloaded from Korg Forums.
This contains the GLOBAL and STYLE folders with Favorites 1-10.
Time spent: About 1 hour with the message Import completed with success.

Everything seems to have been installed - 10 folders with 355 styles.
Original pads? Yes
Original Keyboard Set? Yes
Overall Quality: Excellent
Overall mix quality: Excellent

Several styles cause strings to hang up and the keyboard to be restarted.
Or..?
It turns out that by turning down the volume for Keyboard Sets as well as changing the style, everything normalizes without the need for a restart.

Very good styles and pads, which are excellently mixed and composed.
Despite the fact that some styles cause strings to hang up, I approve of this SESSION, as these styles can be deleted.
APPROVED

Test 3: Styl-v01 SET - contains Style folder, and its origin is guaranteed, as it is downloaded from Korg's website.
Time spent: About 1 minute with the message Import completed with success.

Everything seems to have been installed - 1 folder with 8 styles.
Original pads? NO - Pa5X's standard
Original Keyboard Set? Yes
Overall Quality: Excellent
Overall mix quality: Excellent

All styles work without a hitch, and they sound better than what they did on Pa2X, Pa3X, and Pa4X.
APPROVED

Test4: Styl-v02 SET - contains Style folder, and its origin is guaranteed, as it is downloaded from Korg's website.
Time spent: About 1 minute with the message Import completed with success.

Everything seems to have been installed - 1 folder with 8 styles.
Original pads? NO - Pa5X's standard
Original Keyboard Set? Yes
Overall Quality: Excellent
Overall mix quality: Excellent

All styles work without a hitch, and they sound better than what they did on Pa2X, Pa3X, and Pa4X.
APPROVED

PRELIMINARY CONCLUSION:
It looks like I am correct in my earlier suspicion that everything imported must be 100% original to work properly.

More tests will follow, which in turn will be able to confirm or deny this.

Thanks for your repective comment.
This test will be of great help to users anyway, and will most likely refute what almost everyone says about Pa5X not being able to import without serious shortcomings.

All original SETs I've tested have a quality that surpasses anything else I've installed on previous models.

CONTINUATION OF TEST

Test5: Styles_vol_14 SET - contains Style folder, and its origin is guaranteed, as it is downloaded from Korg's website.
Time spent: Well over 1 minute with the message Import completed with success.

Everything seems to have been installed - 1 folder with 26 styles.
Original pads? Yes
Original Keyboard Set? Yes
Overall Quality: Excellent
Overall mix quality: Excellent

All styles work without a hitch, but one or more styles cause strings to hang up, and restarts must be made.
After restarting, the problem continues if these styles are played and they cannot be used.
NOT APPROVED

Test6: Styles - vol. 19 SET - contains Style folder, and its origin is guaranteed, as it is downloaded from Korg's website.
Time spent: Well over 1 minute with the message Import failed: connection error

Everything seems to have been installed - 1 folder with 11 styles.
Original pads? Yes
Original Keyboard Set? Yes
Overall Quality: Excellent
Overall mix quality: Excellent

All styles work without a hitch, and they sound better than what they did on Pa2X, Pa3X, and Pa4X.
Although Pa5X says that the import failed, everything works as it should.
APPROVED

This part of the test should be of particular interest, because many people at Korg Forums claim that just about everything goes wrong when they try to import Pa4X content to Pa5X.

Test7: Pa4X Internal Styles SET - contains 13 Style folders, and its originality is uncertain.
(I have corrected the folder structure, as this SET had the wrong structure).
Time spent: About 70 minutes with the message Import completed with success.

Everything seems to have been installed - 13 folders with 506 styles.
Original pads? Yes
Original Keyboard Set? Yes
Overall Quality: Excellent
Overall mix quality: Excellent

All styles work without a hitch, and they sound better than what they did on Pa4X.
This test proves that Pa4X content works – and works brilliantly – on Pa5X.
The style Reggae Ballad caused the first time that strings hung up, but after a restart everything works as it should.

TEST OF COMPATIBILITY OF STYLES MADE FROM MIDI

I have tested some styles I have made from MIDI for Pa3X, and these work far better on Pa5X than with Pa3X.

Surprising, and very good.

TEST OF COMPATIBILITY OF STYLES CONVERTED FROM OTHER BRANDS TO PA3X

First lesson:
Never trust that the content is what is provided for files you download from the web.

I first found a package that was supposedly GEM converted to Pa3X, but these turned out to be Roland E-86, and they all had a cruel quality.
The next package was reportedly Ketron converted to Pa3X, which was true enough, as this was X1 and SD1 - but also with a terrible quality.

It turns out that Pa5X displays the original format after the file name, which is very convenient.

In order to test this with absolute certain results, I need to find conversions I have made myself, and this test will thus be followed up soon.

TEST OF SOUND QUALITY OF STYLES CONVERTED FROM OTHER BRANDS

I have tested different SETs I have previously converted for Pa3X:

Ketron X1/SD1:
Reduced sound quality – all DSP effects are missing
Roland E-Series:
Reduced sound quality – all DSP effects are missing
Kawai Z-1000:
Reduced sound quality – all DSP effects are missing
Technics KN-7000:
Reduced sound quality – all DSP effects are missing
Yamaha Tyros1:
Greatly reduced sound quality – all DSP effects are missing

I consider this a reasonably solid basis for being able to claim that conversions from other brands provide poor sound quality on Pa5X.

It can be achieved almost full-fledged Pa5X quality for some styles from Kawai and Technics, but this requires that DSP effects be applied.
The Yamaha Tyros1 performs so poorly that it's not worth the effort.

Automatic mixing generally takes place reasonably well (except Tyros1), but requires adaptations, and the quality of automatic mixing is far below conversions from Korg's models, all of which give a superb result.

It is worth noting that all DSP effects are omitted when converting from other brands, unlike Yamaha models, which retain some DSPs.

Conversions of styles I've made from MIDI to Pa3X, on the other hand, work better than ever, and several styles that used to have had poor sound now work much better.

CONCLUSION:
Styles from other brands generally provide poor sound quality, but I know that some brands' individual models can give perfect results, such as Technics styles from Korg's website is a good example of.
Conversions from styles made from MIDI are performing better than ever.
I therefore choose to say APPROVED

TEST OF STYLES MADE FROM MIDI

I configured Style Works with Pa4X, and opened previously created styles' work files, of which I have thousands.
The results with Pa4X are now clearly better than with Pa3X, which is perhaps due to the update of the OS.

I've tested styles I've previously made for many different models, all of which had one thing in common with every other keyboard I've tested them on:
They worked poorly.

What I'm now experiencing with the Pa5X is absolutely insane:
ALL styles work, and many certainly work brilliantly.
Something that is also very different from all other models is that the Pa5X automatically corrects the EQ as well as adds DSP effects.
As if this is not enough, standard Keyboard Sets and Pads are also added.

No other model from any manufacturer does this, and it is colossally labor-saving that this is now done automatically.
It's also much easier to find substitute sounds that work well, which probably has to be attributed to Pa5X's large library.

Or..?
I don't think that it's just because of this, but that the Pa5X has better sounds than anyone else - just about every sound outperforms all other models'; also Kronos, Nautilus and OASYS.

Conclusion:
Pa5X is the best keyboard of all I've had in all respects, not to mention when it comes to producing good styles from MIDI.
