Rather than tie your registrations to a particular song, try to create registrations that you can use with a particular style of music which you can then use with multiple songs. 

For example country and western do some research for the instruments used in this particular style of music. 

Then work out do the instruments sound better solo or layered with other instruments for this style of music. Do the instruments work in unison or octaves apart. What about slightly detuned.

This is a very good idea: universal registrations.  18

I have long used a universal model when working with different things.
When I create EQ and OTS, I use universal models as a basis.
This is very important to achieve a consistent sound and a stable overall quality level.
