MUSIC IS A CONTROVERSIAL TOPIC

What is good or bad music, and why ?
This is a solid basis for starting a controversy.

Although music is mathematically explainable and mathematically defensible, (it should be) required of the debater a certain musicality.

Here the controversy begins to take shape, because most people only have a limited musicality, while those who have sufficient musicality understand and accept the mathematics of music intuitively.

Music can also have a mathematics that is on the borderline of the inharmonic; so-called A-tonal music, which stretches the harmonic limits to the extreme.

Popular music, on the other hand, is almost exclusively simple and easy to understand, even for the less musical, with simple, easy-to-understand harmonies.
Many people do not like jazz, most often because they do not understand its often complex harmonies, but this can also simply be due to taste and preference.
Classical music is something of the same - it places certain demands on the listener's musicality, but can be fully defended mathematically, and forms the basis for all other genres.

To understand harmonies and their mathematical laws, it is best to study classical music.

A highly educated musician has a solid basis for being able to say what is good or bad music, and is able to mathematically explain why.

It is perhaps also correct to say that bad music is based on harmonies that are repeated over and over again without variations, something that anyone can in principle compose without theoretical knowledge or particular musicality.
Most popular music is like that in my opinion; repetitive harmonies without variations, and digital tools allow anyone to become a composer without any knowledge of music.

Moreover, even the world's greatest composers have their own harmonic signature and tendency to choose their own harmonic variations, such as Beethoven and Mozart and a host of others.

But in any case, music is and remains a controversial victim of people's different tastes, and it is the majority that decides - and they are not musicians and often completely unmusical.

Being criticized for one's musical performance by ordinary people should be given little or no value, while the criticism of a valued musician should be taken very seriously.

Despite taste and liking.

Totally agree with everything you say here.
Music is subjective and ones mans meat is another mans poison.
In terms of technique I marvel at some musicians talent and the other thing is their interpretation and feel, not many have everything.
I wish i had had some formal training when i was young .

Listening to Jesus Molina and Yohan kim  is an inspiration to me and even being shocked by Reg Varney from on the buses play.

I posted this on my site and not one comment Sad.

⚖Colin

Thanks for the comment and the link - I haven't actually heard of Reg Varney before, but he is an outstanding pianist with a very well-established technique that is very difficult to perform.

I haven't heard of Jesus Molina either, but his way of playing appeals to me extremely, and I actually do something like him; I listen to an intro of an unknown song and play it from this - every day.
All my demos of styles from midi are part of this process.
The best musical training in the world.

Yohan Kim is also unknown to me, but he is absolutely talented with his interpretations - jazz has many faces.

You have good taste, and the fact that you actually like this type of music can largely explain why your interpretations are as good as they are; you have a musical gift that only a few have.

Colin.  I Loved the Reg Varney playing...I'm old enough to remember the On The Buses TV Series.
Who would have thought he had so much talent ?.
