A REASON WHY I DON'T USE SHEETS

First and foremost, the reason is that I prefer (insist) on making my own music the way I want it.

Secondly, there is the fear of ending up in a locked-in expression pattern, which hinders my intuitive expressions, which is really the very core of all music - yourself and YOUR expression.

I have seen many good musicians become limited to shadows of themselves because they were too busy following the sheets - my own father is one of them.

He remarried a music teacher, and they taught students for 30 years, while he lost his innate talent for arranging other people's music; previously he did this on the fly without using sheets, and this was his real talent.

In his earlier years, he and his trio played only according to sheets, but discovered that a large part of the profit disappeared in TONO fees to the music industry.

They therefore started to make their own arrangements early on, so that they got all the profits.

When I started to launch my own music, I quickly found out that copyright is something that effectively stops any performer:
Styles (also my own arrangements) where I have added other people's vocals cannot be published without permission from the vocalist and lyricist, and I am fairly certain that many vocalists would have been furious at my freedom to use their vocals.

Therefore, these will never be published, unfortunately.

My performances can often be based on well-known melodies, but are always my own arrangements, and thus I avoid all problems with copyright.

So if you play well-known melodies and follow their sheets, you will meet a wall of copyright - that is why I never use sheets.

I do to an extent use the dots but it’s more as a security blanket in case if forget the chords or something, lately I’ve been using guitar tabs. If I can I will pick out a song by ear where possible.

In my case, I really need my sheet music. I can play something from memory and by feel, but it will never be covers. I really need my sheet music. I have thousands of songs, all covers, and I really can't play them by heart. I'm a real cover music player.

And I have them all on my iPad, so I have everything at my fingertips. Wherever I play, I always have my sheet music with me when I play outside.

I'm really jealous of people who play everything by feel. Unfortunately, I can't and never will be able to. That's why I always need sheet music. Otherwise, I end up improvising on my chords. My work sounds good, but covers, no, I can't play those.

Thanks for your input.

I definitely believe that you can create a lot of great music by improvising on your chords and creating your own compositions.

It's sheet music or no playing for me.
Sometimes I just jam a bit with a nice style but playing without sheets
Is impossible for me...

Thanks

Yves

Pretty dependant on sheets here too, but I like sheets so don't mind too much. I've got my computer set up with MobileSheets so I just pick a sheet and the Registration loads, or I select a registration (or song from Playlist) and the sheet opens. So that's nice, and I don't have to go off looking for sheets each time I want to play something.

Now and again I will try to play piano style, using no sheets... it's pretty bad  25  I think I've lost any left hand I might have had by just playing chords for such a long time, or something. It really doesn't like to work LOL

I use sheets, but I don't play exactly all notes and the ACC as it is show in the sheets.

So long as some folk need sheets I will continue to share them.
As well as relying on sheets I also need the style "to play the left hand part for me".

Let's all keep playing in our own way.
