HOW MANY UNITS DOES THE PERFECT SPEAKER HAVE ? - Chello - 05-04-2025 HOW MANY UNITS DOES THE PERFECT SPEAKER HAVE ? Most scholars would say that the perfect speaker is 3 or 4-way, which is pretty close to the truth. Why ? Because a 1-way (full-range) has clear limitations downwards and upwards in the frequency range, which results in a less good reproduction of these areas. A two-way system consists of a woofer and a tweeter, and this gives a problematic crossover of the tweeter, which is typically about 2kHz, which is in the borderland of what it is actually capable of. The result is an undetailed midrange, while the midrange is the most critical area of all and MUST work. A three-way system solves the problem effectively, because the woofer now has a smaller working area with a focus on the bass range, and the tweeter can be cut much higher with a focus on the high frequency range. The result is a detailed bass reproduction, midrange reproduction and high frequency reproduction, because the midrange is taken care of in a separate unit that gives a large space for choosing the best crossover for all units. So the real trick is to choose a midrange unit that is the best possible, but how ? A full-range unit is, in my opinion, best suited as a midrange, because its frequency range is maximized downwards and upwards in the frequency range. By cutting off the extremes of its frequency range, a midrange of superb quality is achieved, which largely determines the system's final performance. So the perfect speaker is a 3-way, with a full-range unit used as a midrange. |
