Yamaha win judgement - whitecolin1 - 11-08-2023

Yamaha successfully win judgement against Modeli  for copyright infringement £860.000 pay out  case now closed.

It appears Modeli were using all yamaha software to clone their keyboards this is upheld by the court.

What is a worry is Modeli could produce a keyboard similar to the sx900 but £1000 cheaper. Now i know it was inferior but that`s a hell of a difference in price considering they are using the same components.

If anything it will make the Modeli more desirable to entry level users.

The article goes on  to say they need t0 dispose and recall all keyboards (that`s not going to happen)

This is a clear broadside to everyone on copying their products.

Furthermore they have released there operating profits which show a massive decline in keyboard sales, hence the release of new products including the thinly disguised launch of Genos 2.

The demonstrations are coming thick and fast from Yamaha the first one in britain the 17th

Now the shared knowledge bit :-The main dealers will get a kick back for bulk orders i think it important if anything comes down on cost we get fair warning so the members can get the best opportunity to get a deal from these suppliers
Included Yamaha profit statement

From what I understand, there was/is only copyright infringement for built-in styles. And if that's correct, then Medeli only need to replace them (that would make sense for model AKX-10, which is their flagship). As for the rest, AKX-10 has different hardware: 256 voice polyphony (compared to 128 on SX900/700), better display and different (better) operating system.
So yes, I agree with whitecolin1: it makes one thinking about such huge price difference.

It is worth noting that Medeli is manufactured in China, and European manufacturers have no chance to compete in terms of price, as our production costs are astronomically higher.

This year I have imported a considerable number of products from China, and typically paid 10% of what the same costs here.

The quality has generally been higher, but there are exceptions.
One exception is the AKX-10, which is the worst keyboard I've ever played - great data and loads of features, but terrible sound quality.

The future market will consist of more and more quality products from China, at the expense of the Western world, which is losing new market shares every day.
For example, the majority of new car sales in Norway today consist of cars manufactured in China, and this is just the beginning.

So maybe the next Yamaha will be made in Hong Kong..?  22

Well, my Yamaha SX700 is made in Indonesia... no idea if that's better or worse than made in China. But then, I don't really care anymore where it's made.
Nowadays most well known European/USA tech consumer brands are simple China importers. We can see "Designed in USA", "Engineered in Germany", etc., which means nothing (because many times that's only true for brand logo), except huge price increase.
For some "made in china" still gives bitter taste, but as you said, we can get solid quality products from China -unless we buy the cheapest stuff.

I agree that production costs (mainly because of labor) here are higher than in Far East. But then, how come that "rebadged" products imported from China are still priced as being made in Europe/USA? Because big western brands  are greedy: if these products would be made here in the west, then that would mean less profit (not no profit).
And so, over the years we have less and less production factories.. and we are becoming dependent on China products: remember western car industry crisis during Covid? -and that's only a small part of dependency.

well said Bogdan, manufactures hide behind where places are manufactured, whose labor they are using and the profit they are making.
It doesn`t stop there, different countries paying different prices for same products is bizzare.

RE: Yamaha win judgement - Nickt - 11-08-2023

A few years ago I was fed up with the number of people selling what were sold as Yamaha styles as their own productions which were not their own. Clearly they weren't and were ripped off - it wasn't hard to check the style files to see that they hadn't got the knowledge to remove the Yamaha copyright information in the styles.

Before buying these so called original styles I always asked if the were the copyright owner but never got a straight answer. I complained to the selling site that there was copyright infringement but they ruled in favour of the sellers and I almost got banned from the sites.

I took the matter up with Yamaha UK who really couldn't be bothered that other people were misspelling their products and IPR so I quite surprised to see now that they took Medeli to court over using ( and selling ) Yamaha styles with their keyboards.

I think its the technology rather than the styles, knowing they were bringing new products out, they were safeguarding future investments.
in terms of styles and registration too many sites offer these, your fighting a losing battle. What bothers me more is so called respected sites, plagiarizing other sites and then selling as their own. They even leave the conversion log usually tyros3 and who made them.
