Things we all know how to do with our keyboards

7.  Losing all your hard work when setting up a REGISTRATION BANK?

I know several people who set up a REGISTRATION BANK and use it to play something, but never keep the Registration Bank for future reference. So when I listen to what they have played as an MP3 and get really excited about some sounds they have put together (or even a Style they have used) and ask them about it, they can never tell me as they have no idea what they did .. and don’t have the Registration ‘saved’ so they can check it out for me.

Now me .. I like to keep all the Registrations I use for my songs, and will quite often start with a Registration I have previously set up and use it as a basis for another song. Which of course involves making changes to that Registration Bank by pressing MEMORY ...

... and then storing my changes either into the same Memory Slot, or into a new one (my Tyros 4 has 8 Memory Slots for storing Registrations).

Here is an example of doing this.

I want to use my REGISTRATION BANK for Chanson D’Amour as a basis for playing Oh What a Beautiful Morning. In particular, it was the setup for the drawbar organ on my Tyros 4 that I wanted to use again. So have found the Chanson D’Amour Registration Bank and the registrations I had for it are now in the REGISTRATION MEMORY.

The first thing I need to change is the STYLE, as Oh What a Beautiful Morning is 3/4 time.

So my original REGISTRATION BANK has now been changed, and it’s what I do next that has caused me problems.
I sometimes remember that I had something set up in another song and want to check it out .. eg. Blue Moon. So I click on the Registration for that, and immediately my Tyros screen comes up with this ...

I have three options: YES, NO, and CANCEL. At this point, depending on what buttons I press, several things have happened to me.

1.  I have completely lost all the changes I made to my REGISTRATION and it has gone back to what I originally had. Eg. In the example above, Slow Waltz has gone back to the Chanson D’Amour STYLE.
2.  My original REGISTRATION (the one for Chanson D’Amour) has had my changes updated to it .. so I no longer have my original.
3.  The song I was wanting to look at (Blue Moon) has had it’s Registration Bank changed to what is currently in the REGISTRATION MEMORY .. so I no longer have my original Registration Bank for Blue Moon.

Note:  When something goes wrong, it is irreversible!

So if I see this message, I always press CANCEL.

What I always do now when I have made a change to a REGISTRATION MEMORY is to press it’s name, which brings the current name up into the REGISTRATON BANK display, and click the SAVE underneath.

This brings up the page showing the NAME .. in a box further down, where you are able to make changes.

If you are genuinely working on a REGISTRATION BANK and just want to ‘update’ it, then press the OK. It will tell you that the name already exists and do you want to overwrite it? Well, if this is what you are doing, then click YES.

If you are working on a REGISTRATION BANK, but are experimenting and would like to keep the original to fall back on, then you can add a number to the name showing eg. 2, and then press the OK. You will now have two names showing for the song, the original and the one with a 2 on it, so going forward can use either. Incidentally, anything you type in at this point will be added to the end of what you are looking at.

But if you are creating a Registration for a new song, then you need to DELETE the name showing and type in the new one. To delete the name showing, press and hold the DELETE key which will give you a ‘blank’ area to work in.

And then type in your new name.

Now press the OK ...

... and your new name for what is currently in your REGISTRATION MEMORIES will be showing in the REGISTRATION BANK list (in alphabetical order).

Note:  Whenever you type in a NEW NAME, the original remains as it was, and will be showing in the list alphabetically.
It's all about the music!

Hi Hugh,

I always create registrations and keep them to go back on or even alter them.

8.  Changing key using the TRANSPOSE button.

The usual keychange one does when playing a song is to move it up a semitone.

Here is an example.

I am playing Crazy in the key of F .. so will be moving up to the key of F#.
Now there is no way I can actually play it in the key of F# .. so an alternative is to use the TRANSPOSE button on the keyboard and move it up +1.

To make this change sound ‘smooth’, in the bar before the change one needs to play the 7th chord that leads into the key you are moving to. This will be the fifth note of that scale. For example, G7 would lead into C; C7 would lead into F. So C#7 would lead into F#.
The notes for C#7 are C#, F, G# and B .. and that is the chord I have to play (once .. I think I can manage that!).

So the idea here is to reach the end of the song (playing it in F .. so there is an F chord at the end); then play a bar of C#7 .. and while that is playing take your left hand off the keys and press the TRANSPOSE +1.

The keyboard will continue playing your C#7 chord until you place your hand back and play another chord .. which will be F again, now raised a semitone by the TRANSPOSE of the keyboard .. and continue playing your song in F, as you did before.

Have a listen to how this has all worked out. It’s that 7th chord just before the key change that makes it all sound ‘right’.
I have repeated the DEMO so you can hear it twice and judge for yourself.

You can also do all this through a REGISTRATION MEMORY. When you ‘save’ what you have set up into a REGISTRATION MEMORY slot (ie. you press MEMORY and then press the slot where you want it to go) ..

.. it will SAVE a TRANSPOSE change as well.

Thing is, if you are using more than one Registration for your song you have to ‘transpose’ all of them. I am using four REGISTRATION slots for my song (in slots 1, 2, 3 and 4), so have to ‘transpose’ each of those into 5, 6, 7 and 8 so I can play the whole song a second time in the higher key.

Again, when you take your hand off to change from the first block of four to the second .. the keyboard will continue playing your C#7 chord until you place your hand back and play another chord. Which will be F again .. and continue playing the song in F as you did before. of four to the second .. the keyboard will continue playing your C#7 chord until you place your hand back and play another chord.
It's all about the music!
