I recently have had the pleasure of trying the New CVP 809 from Yamaha, Having previously had a CVP709 gloss Black.
First impressions
Lovely laid out piano in gloss white, spoilt for me by being able to see the underside assembly(not in gloss white) which cheapens the look.
The screen is a fabulous TFT screen, large, responsive and colourful.
The key bed is very upmarket and very in similar to a real piano.Pleas note if you are used to a genos or tyros key bed this is much more
weighted like the real thing.
In my opinion The Roland fp90 had a better slightly lighter feel to it.
The speaker system on 809 series is excellent, much better than say a genos, however at £9500 it should be.
The sound engine is the same as genos and are largely good to great quality especially the ensemble voices.
The style section, i was slightly disappointed in, this as they have Revo drums and other upgrades and in comparison
to the 709 didn`t seem a large improvement.
There is a function called piano room ,which you can play piano and get a virtual accompaniment.
Moving from one section to another is the usual same pain, having to come out of style to RGT too show visability.
Overall a beautiful piano arranger with the usual Yamaha flaws, And in my opinion overpriced.
So this is what bothered me the most, No YEM expansion no WIFI
The keyboard doesn`t have any dedicated registration made for it, which seems incredible on a keyboard this price.
Even worse you cant use previous rgt from the genos T5 cvp709 etc.
They also have blocked uploading internal styles like Styles or Midi and audio. I had To do some jiggery pokery to get past this.
So what they have done and very sneaky is, use the rgt format of the CVP 609 and the sx700 missing out the 709 and sx900
This is disgraceful as any previous bought software cant be easily modified even through YRM.
Now this is where the price really concerns me
They say they have made the 809 with Revo drum and style upgrades as a major feature.
But you can buy ghenoos2 programme for £60 and this will upgrade your t5 etc to genos quality drums,
Yet you cant use YEM in the 809 how convenient.
Like anything having the range topper is always nice to have, but this is 9500 pounds and 4 years younger but doesn`t have some functions of some of the smaller keyboards say the dgx670.
This was an opportunity for Yamaha to blow our socks off but instead have just re hashed the previous model and charged you for the pleasure.
Remember when you bought a new tv 4k etc and you were amazed in the shop at the picture quality.
But after a day you couldn`t remember the difference, this was just like that
